Watching a show on the Mystery Channel called "The Real Jack The Ripper", so far Stewart and Bob have been on, looking very dashing and erudite. The program guide claims it's a 2010 production.

Anyone else got any details?

Shit! It's ON now? GREAT! The guys never told me. How does it look? We had very high hopes for this one when it was being shot.

By the way, that Jack the Ripper who walks down an alley and stares up at a window, and emerges up some steps and through a gate? Me!

Looking forward to them sending me a copy soon. Mystery Channel, though? It's meant to be on Discovery or History from what I remember.

Hi Phil.

Here's the breakdown:

The good: It looks slick. You and Bob came across very well, as did Stewart and Don. Paul didn't get enough face-time, but was good when he did.

The bad: The usual things: the re-enactments were more about drama than accuracy, big chunk on the royal conspiracies (even though it largely dismissed them). They were also a little slapdash with identifying who was on-screen sometimes (so I don't know who else was involved). The last segment with the relatives of the victims was interesting, but didn't really add anything to the knowledge of the case.

Bottom line: It was a good, general, all-round Ripper docco. Didn't add much in the way of new info, but I'd certainly recommend it for a newbie who wanted a solid overview of the case.

The torrent is available in the members section.

I apologize that it's a rough copy, with commercials intact and a bit of junk at the beginning and end, but it was the best way to ensure 1) I captured the entire show, and 2) it was made available as quickly as possible.

Hi Phil.

Yep, you need a bittorrent client. Personally, I'd recommend utorrent

http://www.utorrent.com/

Just install it, then double click on the torrent file and it should start downloading the show automatically.

George Hutchinson
08-12-2010, 05:30 PM
Thanks, Magpie. I downloaded the software and the file now appears to be downloading to my PC. A 2GB file, right? Thing is, it appears to be downloading at 3kbps (I have a 20mbps set-up). THREE KB! Is that absolutely NOTHING? How long's it going to take?! Actually, it's currently estimating SEVEN DAYS to download it. Surely that's not right? It's downloaded 1MB in five minutes. Earlier today I was downloading about 8MB a second on YouTube.

PHILIP

EDIT : All right, this is getting ridiculous. 0.2% of the file in HALF AN HOUR. I may consider scrapping this whole thing and uninstalling the software.

Phil, it will speed up as time passes, and as more people start seeding.

It took what seemed forever for mine to upload. I started on it last night.

It has indeed speeded up. Oops - just dropped to crappiness again. One thing that's worrying me is that it also claimed I'm uploading too - currently on about 7MB. What's that about? I don't know about these things and I worry instantly that someone's getting inside my computer.

Unless they scrapped my bits! They shot some footage of me walking down Puma Court in the rain and looking into a lit window. Later on we went to Christ Church and they had me coming up the crypt steps and through a gate. They said they were going to do some green-screen overlays with it later on. No wideawake hat, but I DID have some guy in Canada comment on my YouTube upload saying he was in the studio reconstructions.

Hi Phil, the uploading thing is normal.

The way bit torrent works is that everyone in a "swarm" is connected--you are grabbing available bits from everyone in the swarm, and so is everyone else. That means they are grabbing bits that you have that they need, while you are grabbing bits from them that you need. The more people in the swarm (particularly the more seeders), the more bits there are to grab from and therefore the faster you grab. The seeders (like me) are only uploading at this point.

If it makes you feel better, I only posted the torrent file here--I didn't make it available to any search engine or torrent database, so the only people who are connecting to your utorrent are people who got the file from here.

To put it in perspective, the current "swarm" is about 5 people--the average swarm for a new release movie is at least 3-500.

Whoever played Jack in the final shot had dreadlocks, for some odd reason. He looked a bit like Russell Brand ;)

Thanks, Magpie. It's currently at 10% after two hours and has speeded up to about 180kbps, claiming another three hours at that speed to finish. I've been Facebooking questions as well and loads of my friends have been advising me. It all makes sense now. I knew of torrents but had no idea until tonight about how they worked. Clever little system, really, isn't it?

I avoided torrents for the longest time because they seemed so complicated, but utorrent really does all the work for you. Now I've ditched emule and similar programs and use torrents almost exclusively.

This is the first time I've ever created a torrent from scratch though. I'm glad that utorrent handles that pretty easily too.

I downloaded the player RJM recommended to my laptop, and was thus able to watch the show at work today (whilst getting paid for it!)

I have to say, generally I love it. I really like what they've done, and the errors are small and occasional (and usually from one of 'our lot' rather than a programme-maker's decision, though MOST of it is 'our lot'). I can actually watch myself in this and feel happy with what I say and how it comes across.

Sure, there's no new ground but - at this stage - I personally feel this is about the best JTR show I've seen. It's got no agenda.

The guy with the dreadlocks they keep using as JTR... well, there's a story. He was filming the same night they were shooting me being Jack (but you can't tell it's me) and he was somewhat... erm... eccentric. Not an actor. They'd just spotted him in the street dressed in Victorian clothes and thought he'd look good. They didn't realise he thought he could be the director as well when they were filming him! They were very patient in the circumstances. They were actually going to use him as an example of what JTR WASN'T, because of the hat/cape/bag business, but in some of the shots he almost fits in so I guess they used that short shot of the real dandy in front of Parliament at the end.

Me being the Ripper is in there! The guy coming up the steps near the start and scaring Polly - that's me. Also the silhouette lit from behind in the pouring rain a couple of times. Me too. And the rain was real (but not as heavy as it looked). I like the way they show lots of different men as generic potential Rippers at different times. Pretty much all look acceptable.

I also liked the angle of having Maureen in the show (as well as Neal, of course). This was a necessary and long-overlooked angle. If anyone doubts Maureen's sincerity and the way she seems moved by so much of it, let me assure you it was very real. I had a tear in my eye watching her visiting the grave as I know how much this means to her. I made a friend the day I was filming with her.

The conversion to .wmv is almost complete (taking longer than it actually did to download the DVD files!). I'll work on editing it tomorrow and should be able to upload it to YouTube before the weekend's out.

I thought that was a very striking image. It reminded me of the look of Sin City (with the strong white outline created by the rain).

Btw, for anyone who is warming up to using torrents in the future, I heartily recommend downloading Peerblock, to limit some of the dangers of spyware, viruses and the prodnoses at the RIAA and MPAA:

http://www.peerblock.com/

It's basically a set it and forget it type program. It updates itself every time you reboot, otherwise you won't even notice it's there for the most part.

MKE :

Lets try this :

Send an email me at Donston1888@msn.com

I will try to send you the files... they will be in a zip file, which you will naturally have to extricate. They are also large...like 2.1 gigabytes.

You might want to consider unzipping them into a flash drive, like I did to preserve your free space on your computer ( Like for my captions, for example ). Its up to you.

Then I will try to send them. I cannot guarantee it will work, but dammit, I'll give it a shot.

Hi guys. I've not put it on YouTube because it's yet to be shown worldwide and it probably wouldn't please the programme makers.

However, MKE, if you want to PM me, I can at least burn you a CD file that is viewable on your PC as a Windows Media item. All the commercials are cut out and the sound's boosted from the original.

I still have to wonder if the History showing on 31st August was longer than the Mystery soft-release. The reason being that there are two commercials for the History showing and in the second of the two I am making quotes that aren't in the 40+ minute show I currently have.

If you want to hold on, MKE, I am due to receive a proper DVD of it in the next few weeks.
