When I donated the May 6, 1865 Chicago Tribune article to the Casebook, I noticed it confirmed that Tumblety attended Abraham Lincoln's funeral on May 4, 1865 at Springfield, Illinois. The Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum does have plenty of photographs that were taken on that day. I've seen some of those photographs on the internet, and they contained some pictures of the people who paid their last respects.

That's the address of the Lincoln Library. Are there any Ripperologists in Illinois? I'd bet there are a few young whipper snappers out there who wouldn't mind taking a shot at fame here. We've seen hand drawn sketches of Tumblety, but nobody has ever found a photograph of him. The quack sounded like the type of guy who would have hung around the cameramen at Lincoln's obesquies. What really is helpful is that a famous sketch of Tumblety was drawn the next day (May 5, 1865) which depicted his arrest in St. Louis. That sketch can be used as a guide for anyone who looks through the photos in the Abraham Lincoln Library in search of the doctor. Good hunting!

It's not an actual "photograph" but I thought it might add to the discussion.

Ooops! I forgot to mention, the sketch of Tumblety was done around 1889 according to the crime library article, so this would likely be close to what he looked like in 1888.

I made that same mistake before, Debbie. That's actually a drawing of Sickert, and is a mistake on the part of Crime Library. Somebody should set them straight!

Here's another image of Tumblety, this one from the 'Milwaukee Daily Journal' of December 12th 1888:

Hi AP
Thanks AP. I believe the assertion that Lincoln conspirator David Herold (http://712educators.about.com/blcwphlincoln16.htm) was an associate of Tumblety is not true.

No worries, Chris.
I'm the first to admit that my knowledge of the whole Tumblety episode is scant, to say the least.
However given Dr Francis Tumblety's generous offer made in July of 1891 to give the boy stowaway Samuel Sickerman a home and good education - after visiting the boy in prison - does not really make him sound like a rabid serial killer.
The offer was refused, perhaps because of Tumblety's homosexuality?
Also Tumblety's verbal ramblings, made to the 'New York World' in February of 1889, do not sound much like the hidden secrets of a serial killer, for he tells the newspaper that the London Police only arrested him 'because he wore a slouch hat and was American', and that the London Police all suffered from 'Dyspepsia from eating beef and pot pies and drinking stale beer'.
Anyways here is Tumblety taking a tumble, courtesy of the 'Rocky Mountain News', January 14th 1889:

That's the address of the Lincoln Library & Museum. My days of putting in long hours at libraries have now dwindled down to zero, but I'd bet there are a few young whipper snappers out there who wouldn't mind taking a shot at fame here. Actually, the address is 212 N. Sixth Street. I haven't yet been to this relatively new museum/library, although I live only 90 miles away! One of those things perpetually on my "to do" list. frankly, I don't feel like trawling though hundreds of photographs even if I would be given access. But I have sent an e-mail to one of the staff and if he would happen to report that such a photo exists I would be happy to run over and take a look.

I think that there is a portrait of Tumblety in 'Harper's Weekly'.

We featured the image on the back of Ripper Notes at the time of the first U.S. convention in 2000. The image comes from the cover of the good doctor's own 1865 pamphlet, A Few Passages in the Life of Dr. Francis Tumblety, Including his Experience in the Old Capitol Prison, to which he was Consigned, with a Wanton Disregard to Justice and Liberty . . .:

One thing that has always amazed me about Tumblety is that, since the man loved attention, and was obviously vain to the point of being as 'proud as a peacock', that there ARE no known photographs of the man.
But surely there must have been some - I would guess an extensive collection - taken at the good doctor's own behest. But if so, WHERE are they, and why has not even a single photograph ever been discovered?
So are they still out there just waiting for someone to find them - like the recent image thought to be that of Lincoln - or were there really never any to begin with?
Your opinions here?

Maybe within the collection of say, someone like Hall Caine...
That this guy ( an attention whore like...umm..say me for instance ) doesn't have a lot of photos lying around is almost as unusual as him having none.
Not to divert....but at the FreeLibraryofPhila, Nina and I rented a film by Hitchcock..written by Sir Hall Caine..from 1930 or so...entitled, The Manxman. Maybe Stan has some comments about the flick,I don't know....it was pretty mundane.
