Wold Newton is noted as a place where a large meteorite fell some time around the 1700's. Phillip Jose Farmer, a fantasy writer who delighted in writing biographies of supposedly fictional persons such as Doc Savage, Tarzan etc. suggested that at the time of the fall, there were present two coaches containing a number of people on their way to Scarborough. Those people were to be the parents or grandparents of Fu Manchu, Doc Savage, Tarzan, Sherlock Holmes, Sir Percy Blakeny and others. The theory was that radiation from the meteorite eventually produced superior persons and of course a few villains.
