While some Ripperologists may feel that any of the following murders/crimes may have also been committed by the Whitechapel Murderer....these outrages obviously could not compete, for want of a phrase, with the skein of murders which began in 1888 in press coverage among other things.

The Thames Torso Murders....The Whitehall Mystery....The Pinchin Street Torso...all crimes, in my opinion, which in any other year or period of time would have been scrutinized to a greater extent.

Take the Whitehall Mystery. Consider the location of where the remains were found and then, when possible, peruse the contemporary papers and give the coverage of this shocking event the once over twice.
The same goes for the PST or those Torso murders.

What are your views on the level of coverage these particular crimes/murders recieved ?

Did they get proper coverage with or without the shadow of the Ripper looming over them ?

Hi How:

I think there was less coverage of these murders because there was less to cover, in addition to the fact that they were overshadowed by the Ripper. In all but one of the cases, all you had was a body and with the other it was basically a body and a name. Even in Jackson's case you had no "last sighting" in the same since as with JtR nor did you even have a solid time of death. In all the Ripper cases we learned a lot about the victims eventually and they were all seen alive no more than a few hours before they were found dead. It makes for a more intriguing story that way. That's my estimate at least.

Thanks Stan...

I wonder whether the two events...the Whitehall Mystery & the PST...could be seen or are seen by some as having recieved sufficient or even greater coverage than would ordinarily be expected due to the WM.

Does anyone else feel that way ?

I've just read Mei Trow's book 'The Thames Torso Murders' and can highly recomend it. I was aware of the Pinchin Street torso and the one in Whitehall but didn't realise there were earlier deposits! I was amazed that these bodies were never identified. I think I had heard about the Pinchin Street and Whitehall cases because of their proximitity to the Whitechapel murders timewise, but would like to find out more about these earlier cases.

Yes, I think so... especially the Pinchin St. Torso case because the remains were found in the same area as the 'Ripper' murders, after the others had occurred and the same investigators were involved. It was natural for a link between them to be suggested ( although the police were quick to dismiss any connection) and the press were more than willing to capitalize upon it.

Thanks for the reply Cris.
I sort of flip flop on this issue...at times, I think the other crimes would have faded by now...and at other times, I think crimes ( the Thames Torso murders particularly ) would have their own cadre of researchers operating today without the shadow of the WM.
