This is number 513 of 2000 copies of the Dear Boss letter sent to a daily newspaper in 1888. It is in a wooden frame with a note of authenticity issued by the public records office onthe back. This is a must for any collector of Jack the Ripper curios.I purchased 2 and I am now offering 1 for auction.

Many thanks to Chris for letting me/us know !!

This is a modern copy I take it?

It reads as if 2000 copies were produced in colour in 1888 and sent to newspapers

Hi Nemo

I am not sure. Possibly Stewart can clue us in to whether this might be a modern copy or an original copy from 1888. I do know that the original copies that were made back then for some reason did not include the stamps that were on the envelopes (for how the Dear Boss envelope actually looked when received with stamp see the discussion on the JtR letters on Casebook (http://www.casebook.org/ripper_letters/)) so I suppose it is possible that this is the original copy from 1888 unless it is from the portfolio of copies of documents on the case that the Record Office published under the auspices of Keith and Stewart, although as far as I know that did not have a press run of 2,000.

All the best

Chris

Hi all,

This is a replica of Dear Boss produced by a company called Timeframed.

They released an original limited run of 100 numbered copies in time for the 2001 Ripper conference in Bournemouth, where Paul Begg and I had arranged for the original Dear Boss to be on display. I was sent a copy of the Timeframed replica for our raffle, which was won by Dave Russell.

I know they were going to release an increased run after the initial 100, but wasn't aware it was 2,000.

Timeframed, who produced a catalogue of framed replicas (http://gillerghost.tripod.com/timefram.htm), appear to be out of business.

Best wishes
Adam

Incidentally, an article by myself on the Macnaghten Memorandum in the imminent Ripperologist issue 124 also looks into how Dear Boss was returned anonymously to New Scotland Yard in 1987.

Many thanks for the information Adam

Does anybody have Ripper related stuff like this on show in their house?

I've often wondered what happened to some of Forbes Winslow's letters which he apparently framed and had on his wall

He put so much import on them in his life that it would be a real shame if they had been discarded

Hi Adam et al.

Adam, thanks for clarifying that this is in fact a reproduction and not an original from 1888. Nemo, I understand that Forbes Winslow's framed Ripper letters are enshrined in the Forbes Winslow museum in the skies. :becky:

Also, Adam, the Ripperological community is waiting with baited breath for what we have to offer in Ripperologist 124. It should be one of our best issues. :)

All the best

Chris

I'm holding out for the kidney. Or at least an amazing facsimile.
