Ideas..I got millions of 'em. Thats why I make the big bucks around here..
I was thinking of setting up a monthly thread devoted to discussion of all the articles within the respective magazines for the benefit of those who do not subscribe to these educational and valuable reference tools.
Sort of like an "online magazine" in itself for those who for one reason or another don't subscribe.
You'll miss Joe Chetcuti's story in the latest Ripperologist if you don't subscribe and the Trevor Marriott Q & A in the latest WS1888 Journal as well. Not to forget Ripper Notes and their usual A+ articles.
But as an inducement for people to subscribe ( which might mean a contribution to the magazine in the form of an article down the proverbial road...) I was wondering if some people would like to take the horn by the bulls here and help out with this idea. In other words....would some of you like to offer your views on the articles in the most recent magazines on a thread devoted to this noble venture?
Naturally,we won't ask any of the editors of the respective magazines to "grade" the articles in another magazine, unless they wish to do so in anonymity.
What do you folks think? Sound like a good idea?

Awesome idea How!
If I might add a suggestion: Perhaps this thread could also be used to alert members of Ripper related articles appearing in non-ripper magazines--history or scientific magazine for instance....

Magpie:
Thats a good idea too,old bean !
There are articles and even commentary by "non-siters" as well as peripheral sources which would be to all of our benefit if they were reviewed.
Lets face it...there are quite a few people here...like yourself,Magpie...Mr.Invisible,who is on top of the contemporary crime scene at his site....and just about everyone here to be honest who could augment the site with their views and observations on material we sometimes can't find the time to read.
I'd like to kidnap Jeff Bloomfield and get him to do this fulltime....but since I can't... ...........
..............It would be nice to have people on our site other than the management review the articles in the magazines....
Thanks Magpie....and if you want the "job"...you can go, man ,go...:thumbsupbud:

I ran across this while doing a search of the History Today magazine archives.
It's a letter to the editor about a story last year about Prince Eddy that mentions his candidature for the Ripper crimes.
I found this extremely interesting.
Ripping Yarn
I refer to the article by Andrew Cook on the Duke of Clarence (November 2005). He claims the story of ‘Eddy’ and Jack the Ripper was ‘created’ by Dr Thomas Stowell. This is absurd, as the idea of the connection between the Duke and the Ripper was widespread when I was young in the 1930s.
Dr Cook has to rely on printed material, I suppose, but there must be many people like me who have memories of the story before the article in the Criminologist.

Talk about synchonicity.
The cover story for the current issue of Canadian History magazine "The Beaver" is "Was Jack the Ripper Canadian", and features 3 stories.
The Main Feature is "The Evil Deeds of Dr Cream", and there are two supplimentary stories: "Four More Suspects" and "The History of Choroform"

Nice work Magpie !:thumbsupbud:
It might be a good idea to add links like Magpie just did,in addition to discussion of articles...

Just a friendly reminder...:)
This thread was for magazine articles and reviews...
In addition...no harm done...but events transpiring at other sites, even though most of us are members of other sites...should be confined to that site. No biggie as I said, because I've done the same thing before myself.
I hope that that scenario turns out for the best for all parties concerned.

The news juggernaut that is the Ilford Recorder had an article about Jack the Ripper/Dr Barnardo in it's Oct. 6 edition.
Here's the link (http://www.ilfordrecorder.co.uk/content/redbridge/recorder/news/story.aspx?brand=RECOnline&category=newsIlford&tBrand=northlondon24&tCategory=newsilford&itemid=WeED06%20Oct%202006%2011%3A16%3A25%3A150) (You'll have to track down the hard copy for the full article)

It would be appreciated it someone, not affiliated with any of the Ripper magazines, would apply for the position of Forums Critic, for their views on the articles which should be reviewed.
Thank you.

Hot off the Press, PRINT (http://www.wimborneminster.org.uk/printframes.html), The Parish Magazine of Wimborne Minster has an article about the Druitt's buried on the church grounds.
Here's the relevant part of the article, "Hidden History" by Christine Oliver
------------------------------------
The cemetery holds one or two notable people, not least Montague Druitt. Two talks were given by David Anderson, who has studied the Druitt family in detail.
He still considers Montague as the strongest contender for Jack the Ripper, the 19th century murderer who performed the most gruesome killings in Whitechapel.
He was born in Wimborne in 1857, son of William and Anne Druitt, who lived in Westfield House, Wimborne. A failed Barrister, who became a teacher at Blackfriars School, an exceptional sportsman and particularly good at cricket. His body was discovered in the Thames in December, his pockets were filled with stones.
It is said he was afraid of I becoming like his mother, who was sent to an asylum in London. No more murders of the same gruesome pattern were committed following his death.
Montague Druitt was buried in the cemetery, unusual for what is thought to be a suicide. Accounts show that a lot of money was paid to lay him to rest there. Perhaps to make his grave more secure.
He is next to his brother William, with their parents buried just behind them.
I then learned that we have Druitts buried in the Minster ground, under the yew tree by the South Transept. The grave stones are worn and difficult to read, but I found the names Catherine Druitt, who died in her 60s in 1815, also Elizabeth Druitt, who lived to be 72 and died in 1820.
The next stone showed Sarah Druitt, eldest daughter of the late Thomas Druitt of Wimborne, Surgeon, died, aged 64 in 1850.
A very ornate stone records Mary Druitt, whilst another shows what looks like 'Sacheveral' Druitt, who departed this life in the 1790s, aged over 70.
Thomas Druitt is next in the line of stones, he died in December 1814, aged 63, also of his only son Robert Druitt, surgeon, who died on 23rd March 1822, aged 37, and Ann Guich Druitt, who died in 1821, aged 50.
One of the largest stained glass windows in the Minster is dedicated to the Druitt family. Situated in the South Transept it shows 'The healings Christ performed in His ministry'.
Several of the Druitts appear to have been surgeons and would have healed many people. The window looks out on the family graves, so was carefully placed all those years ago.

You see, even here, we get the "failed barrister" bit. This wouldn't have come from David.

Mike Covell has had a couple of very good articles appear in the most recent issues of Ripperologist.
The first appeared in March, entitled: Dissecting the Incident Off Flamborough Head....which covered aspects of the 1868 shooting of the former suspect D'Onston Stephenson.
The second recently appeared in the April edition, entitled : The Hull Ripper Craze, which brought to light several Ripper related articles that appeared in newspapers in the Hull area during the WM.
If anyone cares to discuss these articles, lets start something up...
Thank you.

Thanks Howard, very kind of you to say so. As you know I am working very hard on getting to the bottom of the whole Stephenson saga, as you are, so it's always nice to have positive feedback.:becky:

This month's issue of Ripperologist Magazine will be the focus of the Forums reviewers. May I also suggest that you that do not subscribe to the Rip be aware that there will be a photo of a suspect previously unpublished in this issue and that will not be placed on either this site or any other. So break open your wallets,folks...and subscribe !!!
I'm asking Magpie and Mike Covell...and of course, anyone else who subscribes to the Rip....to help out here this month. Lets try to make this a regular feature each month.
