A surprisingly large number of people believe that the Diary reads as actually would the diary of a serial killer with issues such as James Maybrick was known to have – the drug use, the marital problems, etc. As such, they have proclaimed on the message boards of Casebook: Jack the Ripper that the Diary must be genuine because it possesses such a ‘ring of truth’. Naturally, there exists a strong disagreement on this interpretation, as well as on other aspects of its content, particularly in regards to the verisimilitude of certain of the Diary’s phraseologies, and these arguments will probably never be settled to everyone’s satisfaction. But no one had ever expressed such contrary opinions concerning the work of Mark Hofmann, even though he had created a horde of documents represented to be from a period predating the Diary by nearly 60 years. How did he work around this issue?

“To get the right "voice," Hofmann had read old newspaper accounts and letters from the time period. He included in the letter references to some of the people who "authored" his other forgeries. It was clever, painstaking and certainly amusing to him. He had written the poem in the back of the prayer book to authenticate the letter. So much for the FBI's analysis.”
