Thread for discussing the Irish presence in East London..
One of these days,I will ask for Alan Sharp's permission to place a few letters from his book on the Irish Press....someone remind me.
If people wish to begin discussing the Irish as an entity ( From Sir Robert Anderson to Francis Tumbelty) and their role in the WM, in the press, the police, the populace, and the politics...please do so at your convienience....Thank you.

Hello How
Good thread, Howard.
The Irish and the Jews shared in common that they were looked down upon and viewed as "outsiders." Even though Ireland was part of the British Empire and was in a union with England, Scotland, and Wales, the Irish were looked upon as backward and ignorant. This stereotyping of the Irish is portrayed in period cartoons depicting the "bog Irish" or Catholic peasants. The view of the Irish in British cartoons was often similar in American cartoons of the time as well. Have a look at the cartoons and information on the following site and associated links:

I received permission from Alan Sharp to reproduce letters found in his 2005 book ( and one with a distinct angle in how the WM were reported back in the o'day...in the Irish press.) and will begin to place them here for discussion.

A suggestion....
If Tom Wescott or perhaps someone else who has read Alan's excellent book ( edited by both Begg and Evans and considered a flawless Ripper book ) would like to suggest one,two or even more letters or excerpts from the book...tell me and I will post them on this thread.
One well known element of the Whitechapel Murders that some modern Ripperologists may feel is a 20th century,Hollywood spawned "myth" is the Man With The Black Bag tale.
Alan's book contains contemporaneous examples of this tale occurring immediately following the Double Event. These incidents displayed the degree to which the Ripper had enraged and solidified East Enders following the Chapman murder on the 8th of September....
In addition, a report found in the Meath Herald has this to say about the perception East Enders had of the Ripper (on page 230) and what the crowds might have done with these innocent gents had the poor souls been cornered in a cul de sac or further away from police protection...
"A similar incident ( that of a man nearly being lynched...) is reported by police to have occurred,on the average, daily over the past fortnight ( two weeks )..."
As usual...Albert Bachert is mentioned in the midst of cornering or seeing someone suspicious...
In the Freeman's Journal of October 2nd, Bachert's encounter with a man ( with black bag) is detailed...and which involves the encounter at the Three Tuns in Aldgate and that this mysterious gent was inquiring about how feasible it would be for these unfortunates to stroll down Northumberland Alley as well as down Fenchurch Street with him...
My Whitechapel map is not that detailed and doesn't have these two locales on it. The Three Tuns,in case you aren't aware, was on or near the corner of Whitechapel High Street and Somerset Street.....diagonal to Goulston Street.
If anyone is familiar with the location of these two streets, please provide that for us if possible.
In addition,if you haven't read or heard of this encounter as described by Bachert, please speak up and I will gladly post it here.
