Nina and I were reading Sugden's "Complete" the other day and I came to the section where Mr.Sugden discusses Robert Anderson and some of the numerous declarations Sir Robert made during the Autumn of Terror....and in the 2nd decade of the 20th century.
Like you,I've read them before. Yet,as one studies The Case over time, the impact and/or importance of Anderson's statements as well as other authority figures ( police,in this case...) get put on the proverbial back burners of our mind(s).
One such declaration that Anderson made ( which,if you have your Sugden handy,is on page 398...) and which is extracted from Anderson's memoirs, The Lighter Side of My Official Life is the declaration that ..."for it is a remarkable fact that people of that class will not give up one of their number to Gentile justice..".
On October 23rd, five days after the house to house search which had been conducted throughout homes inhabited by East End Jews was finished, Anderson jettisoned a report to Sir Charles Warren which essentially stated that the inhabitants of the area were co-operative especially in the house to house searches....for the Ripper. These may be found in HO 144/221/A49301C/8c.... and in HO 144/221/A49301C/8a
Anderson makes more claims, which we all know and if so desired, perhaps we can discuss some of these statements here.
Some of us do not put much credence in the post-career writings of Anderson ( even some police officials at that time...)...and yet some certainly do.
What are we to make of this obvious about face by Anderson 25 years after the October house to house investigation?
Anyone care to begin? Perhaps discussing one of the other statements made by Anderson,if you so care to ? Maybe even another police official who "got it wrong" ?
Thank You.
