In Tumblety's 1872 autobiography, he printed a letter that was sent to him by a 'distinguished correspondent' named C.A. Plummer. Tumblety was living in San Francisco at the time. The letter was dated May 4, 1870. I doubt the letter was genuine. It's more likely that Tumblety wrote it himself. Anyway, at one point in the letter Tumblety was asked "Do you visit the Cliff House and take a ride on the beach?"
The Cliff House is one of the oldest and most popular spots in San Francisco. It was established in 1863 and it has a tremendous view of the Pacific Ocean. Google it sometime, it really has a marvelous history. Its guest book contains the names of three U.S. Presidents. Tumblety would have gone there for sure in 1870.
My jazz trumpet buddy Phil Grenadier is blowing his horn in South America right now, but he'll be in the San Francisco area for a few weeks in August. He told me that he has lined up a gig on Friday night August 15th in the Cliff House!! Maribel & I are really psyched out for this one. We're already setting up a great evening there for our family and friends.
Roger and Scott, if you guys ever make it down to San Francisco for an evening this summer, make sure it's August 15th! You may not see Tumblety's shadow materialize that night in the Cliff House, but you'll sure hear some good music and eat delicious food. Check out Phil's schedule... he'll be there for sure!

Well oddly enough Joe, I was there about two months ago - entertaining relatives from the eastern side of our continent. This isn't some rambling babble from a native attracted to a local hotspot - the Cliff House is one of the most breath-taking places on the California coastline. Mr. Sutro had it right. I wonder of Tumblety knew him? Did Tumblety visit the baths, per chance?

Hi Scott and Joe
A couple of glowing recommendations for the Cliff House. I will have to check the place out when I am out that way. Thank you, both.
