Did Tumblety own a greyhound?
Or not?
The answer is in the 'New York Herald' of December 10th 1860:

And speaking of whores and horses, keeping in mind Dr. Tumblety's supposed hatred of women, I was reading this morning in a review of the new Stephen King novel, Duma Key, a quote of a remark by the novel's main character, a disagreeable and bellicose writer: "you can lead a whore to culture, but you can't make her think." (New York Times Book Review, March 2, 2008, in a review by James Campbell.)

Chris,
That reminds me of the crooked mortician who tried to drown his hearse in a lake to fraudulently collect the insurance money. To his dismay, the vehicle floated on the surface and was saved. It just goes to show...
"You can lead a hearse to water, but you can't make it sink."

Hi Chris. That's an oldie but a goodie... I've also seen it spelled differently to get around censors & go on t-shirts & things:
"You can lead a horticulture but you can't make her think."
And by the way, in case anyone has ever wondered:
Yes, it's true, you CANNOT make a horse drink if it doesn't want to. I have 2 horses & we just had a massive heatwave with temps over 100 degrees, so I was worried about their water intake and I tried... they just laughed at me.
