*1. What exactly about the Whitechapel Murders first captivated you...and after that initial exposure, what has kept your attention to it?*
Like most people I had heard of “Jack the Ripper” only in passing and knew very little about the case. I was even under the impression for a time that JTR was basically a myth or fokelore which had no basis in reality. My interest in finding out more came after seeing the film ‘From Hell’. Just to demonstrate my complete lack of knowledge about the case, I can honestly say when I first watched it I was in the dark about who the film was going to label the murderer. After watching the film several times, I decided to google JTR and that is when I discovered Casebook and jtrforums. It was only after reading through the message boards that I found myself captivated well beyond the superficial shock value and found myself reading anything and everthing I could find related to the case.
*2. What good may have transpired had reward offers been made after the Tabram murder?*
I tend to be one who includes Tabram among the victims of JTR, although I could easily be persuaded otherwise if some new information were to come about. A reward may have resulted in an arrest and perhaps saved one or two of the C-5, but I think in reality a reward would served very little. JTR was more than just lucky; I believe he would have taken even more steps to make himself less likely of a person of interest for reward seekers.
*3. Whats your opinion of why there was a six week gap in time between the last assumed Ripper murder and the November 9th murder of Kelly ? Elaborate if you wish...*
I think the gap was purely a result of lack of opportunity. There was a heightened police presence after the Eddowes murder as well as a heightened awareness among potential victims. I believe that JTR was trolling the streets during this period but not getting the comfort level he would need to murder another victim outdoors. I think Kelly was probably a perfect solution to the problem of always having to look over his shoulder. I think it also explains the escalated mutilations in the Kelly murder. He had waited patiently (in his eyes) and now he had all the time and privacy in the world to indulge his six week pent up frustrations.
*4. In light of the number of murders which were assumed to be similar to Jack The Ripper's work in far away places such as Poland and Chicago, post-1888 ( several in 1891-1892)...do you think that this is where his influence is most seen..or perhaps somewhere else?*
I believe it’s certainly to be expected that murders would occur all over the world which would be similar in nature in the following years after Kelly. The print media would spread news of JTR’s atrocities all over the world and it makes perfect sense that those who would be predisposed to murder would take notice of the attention given towards JTR and crave some of that attention for themselves. The immortal romanticism in regards to JTR may be the largest influence of his work. This has carried through until the present day and I believe still influences current and future serial murderers.
*5. Which Ripper book do you refer back to often ( perhaps the most ) for corroborating sources and references ? Or, do you refer to message boards primarily?*
I refer to the message boards primarily because they seem to have the most up to date information, but I also use the A-Z also.
