I originally had high hopes that my great great grandmother Margaret Tumblety Conroy of Dublin, Ireland was Francis Tumbleiy's older sister. So I did a bunch of research on the Tumblety family. Long story short his older sister Margaret was Margaret Kelly -- not Margaret Conroy.

This family fascinates me. So even though I am not closely related to Francis a fine suspect to be Jack the Ripper or at the very least a lovable psychopath, I would like to share what I have found with you. What I have to offer is pure genealogy, I will leave the psycho analysis and the Ripperology up to you all I hope some of it is helpful and I look forward to your comments, critiques and additions.

Dear Bill:

Don't feel bad, sir. You could have been related to Pearly Poll. Think positive !

One coincidence I can share ( There are others) with you about D'Onston and my Dad.

After Donston left the London Hospital in December of 1888...he immediately moved to St.Martin's Lane...in London.

My Dad was born on St.Martin's Lane in 1915 in Philadelphia...and was born in December.

Francis was the youngest of 11 or 12 children (depending on if you believe he had a brother named Frank L.) We can document two older brothers, Lawrence the gardener who was ten years older and a confirmed bachelor and Patrick the gas works guy who was 7 years older. Then there was his father James and that's it for male role models. Then he had 8 older sisters and his mother Margaret. I fine this to be a very interesting family composition. He had two or three older brothers and 8 older sisters. Then I think of the damning descriptions of him as a teenager and I wonder how the family composition may have shaped him?

This is about as close as I will get to psycho analyzing the group. I'll do James the patriarch and Margaret the Matriarch in the next installment.

I have only found a couple of records on James Tumblety. I have no idea how or when he got into this country. What I do know is in the 1848/49 Rochester City Directory:he is listed as James TUMILTY, last h. S.Sophia .This places him in what turns out to be the family neighborhod in later years The inscription on the family memorial in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery states:James TUMUELTY, 7 May 1851, 74 yrs This pinpoints his time of death and mades him born about 1777.

A quote from Captain Streeter in Dec 1888.(Tumblety's) father was an Irishman(who) lived on the common south of (Rochester) on what was then known as Sophia Street, but is now Plymouth Avenue. - Earlier Captain Streeter remembered James, as an Irishman who headed his family on Sophia Street. Martin McGarry would later say that James was a wealthy Irish gentleman who left his son Francis a big lot of money upon his death.

James died on May 7, 1851 and the Rochester City Directory of 1851/52 listed Margaret as a widow. It also listed Francis as a peddler. This brings two dynamics into play. First, where was James in the 1850 census? Maraget is there with Lawrence, Francis and Ann but no James. Second, it has been established that not only is Francis a good for nothing teenager but he was a peddler which is not the highest calling to have. If James did have money, why would he leave it to him? And also, where did the money come from?

In summary, it appears that James sired 11 or 12 children in Ireland. It appears that he came to this country prior to his wife and two youngest children. Many times Irish immigrants came to this country, worked and sent money back to bring their families over. While I do not now this for sure, it is a distinct possibility. There is a lot to be learned about James the Patriarch. Any information would be helpful.

For the times there is good documentation on Margaret. She, Francis, his sister Ann and a James (not the father) arrived at the Port of New York on June 21, 1847 on the Ashburton from Great Britain. With the help of the Federal Census and Rochester city directories a decent profile emerges of her decliniing years. She was apparently dependant on her eldest son Lawrence and in her last 5 years her eldest daughter Alice Tumblety Fitzsimons.

Here is a profile of Margaret from the time she arrived in the United States until she died. Spelling and names are as they appearded in the documents.

Lawrence Tumblety was the eldest brother of Francis. He never married, lived in the same Rochester neighborhood from 1844 to 1898 and was a gardener all of his life. His mother and two youngest siblings lived with him, in the late 1840’s, and early 1850’s . He was the first recorded Tumblety in the country. Also it appears that he changed his name from Tumblety to Tumuelty in 1875. That is the name on the family memorial in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Rochester. It is also the name in the 1844 city directory.
Francis and Lawrence appeared to have been direct opposites. Francis was a flamboyant world traveler who made his money by any means he saw fit. Lawrence was a stay at home kind of guy as previously noted who toiled in other people’s gardens
.However, they did have one thing in common. Lawrence was a confirmed bachelor and Francis might as well have been one also.

Lawrence was found regularly in the Rochester City Directories.. I could not find him in the 1870 or 1880 census using every search trick I knew.. Here is a profile of him. Please note; If a source is not identified. It is from the Rochester City Directories.

This is all very much appreciated, Bill. You've done a fine job.

Edward Haywood knew Tumblety during the late 1840's. Haywood said, "(Francis Tumblety) lived with his brother, who was my uncle's gardener."

Francis may have had a good relationship with his older brother Lawrence.

Patrick Tumblety was Francis’ other brother. While I am not sure when he entered this country, he was possibly the Jas. age 26 who entered with this mother in 1847. His son is James Patrick and his grandson is Patrick James and his father is James. So there is a possibility that he was James Patrick or Patrick James and to avoid confusion he was called Patrick. He married a woman named Mary they had only one son James P. who was born in 1851. Patrick died at a young age on Sep 20,1859 when he was hit by a falling chimney. Patrick had worked at the gas works as a fireman and a laborer.
Mary did not die until 1877. It appears that Mary and her son James moved in with Margaret and Lawrence on Plymouth ave. about 1861. His son James Patrick Tumblety (changes his name to Tumilty in 1875) appeared to be fairly prominent in Rochester. We never get a clear look at what he did for a living through the city directories but in the census he was a capitalist in 1900 and “own insurance” in 1910. Additionally, he was an assembly man in Rochester. He was married to Mary J. from England and they had 7 children. He died in 1911.
Patrick is found in the city directories and the 1850 census. His wife is found in the city directories until she died in 1877

Hi All,

The 1871 Rochester Directory lists Francis Tumblety's mother, Margaret, and Patrick Tumblety's wife, Mary, living on Plymouth Avenue at the corner of Magnolia.

Margaret died in 1873. Mary died in 1877

But on an 1888 Rochester map both plots of land are marked "Mary Tumblety Est", which I am assuming means estate—

5668

Do we know who inherited the property?

Regards,

Simon
