I hardly recognised Portsmouth in '03 Suz, so Lord knows if anything, except my dad's driving, will be recognisable in another two years -- by all accounts, certainly not your 'aise! I'll need to be met with a guide dog when I ever do make it back or I'll be bloody lost for sure..

Wasn't there a Smith's factory along the Eastern Rd at one time?

I wish we could make it there in October!

Blimey! could well be- or Mrs Ringo (Maureen!):).......looking back at that ad- I don't remember 'hamburger' flavour- do you??...Doner Kebab maybe- but p'raps that wasn't crisps!

Smiths had a factory on the Southampton Road just behind the school where I taught for 20 odd years and you could always tell what day it was by the wafts in the windows- Mmmmmmm Salt and Vinegar....must be Tuesday .....'Cheese and Onion'... Thursday without a doubt!
Kept me on the straight and narrow- (salt and vinegar!) to know what day it was- of course the kids used to be allowed out for an hr at lunchtime in those (happy) days and strangely my store cupboard was filled with odd boxes of........well you know!
As a factoid- Frank Smith opened his first crisp factory in Cricklewood in 1920!!!...blessim!

Dear Adam:

Thanks very much for the information you've provided. Thats a great photo as C.G. mentioned.

I wish I could go...but British Customs hasn't rescinded their order to keep undesirables outta the U.K. ...so I'm probably gonna be stateside listening to the ballgame on the radio.:banghead:

Keep a sharp eye on Covell-Klosowski too...He mentioned something privately about him needing a lot of towels and ashtrays at home....and I get the impression he only wants to go to London for that sole purpose.

I've just looked at the different hotel websites and may stay over. I would rather know who is staying where as I don't really like walking down the roads late at night since my daughter and I were mugged in Petticoat lane a few years back. Where is the travelodge? Liza usually stays at the city hotel and I know where that is. The cheapest is in Aldgate but as it's close to my station I might as well go home!

Thanks Suzy,
I know where it is now. The map thingy that Adam posted was too small for my old eyes to see! My dilemma is that I do live really close. It would only be £40 in a cab to get home plus a fiver for the train the next day to get back, so is it cost effective to stay? More fun, certainly, but if the bar shuts at 11 I could still go home by train! If I remember rightly, the fun starts after the bar closes (or it did in Brighton!)

LOL! When I lived in the Midlands, all I ever did was public transport! But down here in the South West, public transport is so useless you get out of the habit.

At a guess, it would involve a lift to Tiverton or Exeter, then through to Reading, then a change .... and then no-one would see me again, because I'd get trapped in a loop on the Underground, forever searcing for the right connection, like some unfunny version of Groundhog Day.....

Plus, how would I carry all those books I plan on buying???

Dear Jackie and all you Brits....

40 pounds is roughly $60 in real...er, American money.

It costs $ 60 to take you no more than on a 5 mile ride?... Whew !!!

I know what profession I'd check into if I moved to the U.K. the instant I hopped off of the plane. It still only costs around $10 for an 8 mile ride in Philly and I know.... I used to moonlight as a hack to keep the monkey on my back way back in early 1980's.

Thats a real outrage. My friend at work told me that he would have had to give up smoking if he had to live in London for anymore than a week...I know Andy Aliffe was stunned when I told him about the $1.40 per pack cigarettes I get from the Native Americans in New Mexico and still do,back in 2006 in Baltimore at the US Convention held there.....

I'm still shaking my head at how you poor folks try to make ends meet over there. I hear rent is pretty damned high for apartments too.

Sorry for the intrusion on this thread: Back to The UK Convention planning.

Adam,

I meant it was surprising how much interest this early on! I fully expect that I will meet loads of new people and forget their names just as I have at every conference so far! I will definitely be taking part in any extra curricula activities on the friday and sunday evenings, and as it looks like a few people will be around, I'm probably better of booking a room as my hubby will worry about me walking the streets.

Helen,

point taken! We in the south-east take public transport for granted.

I know I took it for granted in the Midlands. Fact is, around here, it's not uncommon for buses to just not turn up because the bus driver can't be bothered to take an empty bus around the route.

Now why can't I find out how much that damned car park in Middlesex Street costs! I mean, surely it's a simple enough question? Instead, I'm just getting sent around different NCP pages just giving me addresses! Argh!

Sam Flynn

Now why can't I find out how much that damned car park in Middlesex Street costs! I mean, surely it's a simple enough question? My mate parked at the NCP in St Martin's Lane (WC1) while we went to see an opera. Just over three hours later, after the show, we returned to the NCP to find that the bill came to almost £20, as I recall. My mate's reaction: "Celebrate, guys! Looks like I just bought myself a car park!". That was 14 years ago - perhaps the tariff has come down since then, or perhaps Middlesex St is cheaper?

Edit: here are the current prices for the NCP at St Martin's Lane...

2 Hours £ 11.00
2 To 4 Hours £ 17.00
4 To 6 Hours £ 23.00
6 To 9 Hours £ 29.00
9 To 12 Hours £ 35.00
12 To 24 Hours £ 40.00
Motorcycle Per Day £ 3.00

They certainly used their heads in pricing the conference fees this year. 75 quid. The airfares across the pond have dropped. So tempting. I'm supposed to be in Seattle that weekend at a steampunk convention. Double the airfare and I'm in London. In October. I could go to newly renovated St. Martins-in-the-Fields or have a gander at the Great Fire Memorial that is now actually viewable. I could visit a friend in the Royal Docklands. I could do all sorts of things at a price infinitely better than the $2/pound the last time I was there. Like buy a bloody pint. Or three.

Oh, drat. Decisions....:drama:

Since I missed you last time, please try and make it this time.

I'd love to finally meet you! I have various irons in the fire that need to get sorted before I make a commitment. I have already begun talking up the idea to the spouse. If we don't do the other trip, complete with taking the train from Seattle to Chicago, we could do the London to York to Edinburgh journey. My next Rover book may well be set in Edinburgh so the research portion would be valuable, though it will be some time before that book is written. Still, it's a grand excuse to visit Scotland which is on my list of "must see" locales.

I remember Alan Sharp talking about expensive UK train tickets. Wow -- your train fares are amazingly high. A coach seat on Amtrak from Seattle to Chicago is $150 for a 45 hour journey. A second class ticket from London to E'burgh is $216 for a bit over 4 hours. :faint:

Wow -- your train fares are amazingly high. A coach seat on Amtrak from Seattle to Chicago is $150 for a 45 hour journey. A second class ticket from London to E'burgh is $216 for a bit over 4 hours.
It depends, Jana. If you buy in advance, it can be as low as £42.50 each way, provided you make sure you'll be on the train you've booked - it's still much more expensive, mile for mile, than Seattle to Chicago, however. To give you an idea of how daft our train pricing system is, here are the various "deals" quoted for precisely the same journey, London Euston to Edinburgh Waverley Station, on precisely the same days:

4570

Sometimes it's cheaper to book multiple single tickets for a given journey, depending on whether you're travelling before 9AM, after which fares become dramatically cheaper. So, if you're travelling from "A to Z", but you don't hit 9AM until you reach station "F", it sometimes pays to book a single from "A to F" and another single - at the lower rate - from "F to Z". You might not even have to leave the same train, but it'll be much cheaper than buying a ticket straight through from A to Z. How stupid is that?! Mind-bogglingly complex, and a minefield for the unwary.

You know, Sam, I got to thinking after I'd posted that I certainly didn't pay anything that outrageous when we went to Telford, Wolverhampton and Manchester the last trip. I made a mental note to go to the trainline.com site and maybe find better fares. You certainly did!!

I will definitely keep your A-Z rule in mind. I know the rates change for the Tube, but didn't think about that for the train. Thanks for sharing that tidbit. The less I spend on transport the more I can afford for a nice hotel and the occasional bit of scotch. :high5:

We are delighted to announce two speakers appearing at the Conference, both focusing on aspects of the same victim.

Elizabeth Stride: the Beginning will feature Daniel Olsson's unique research into Liz's birthplace and early years, shown in the form of a exclusive preview of Daniel's DVD, currently in production for 2010. Copies of this promo DVD will be available to buy at the Conference.

Elizabeth Stride: the End will feature Philip Hutchinson on the Dutfield's Yard photograph, which he'll be showing and exploring its origins. This will be the first time that the photograph has been shown to a large audience in the UK, having been presented at last year's Ripper Conference in the US and fleetingly on the Casebook message boards.

Gail Dowle will be taking shots of the the entire weekend on our behalf, with a view to our providing these on a CD after the event.

Remember to smile!

We're also pleased to make a correction to our last announcement; Daniel Olsson has been in touch to clarify that the DVD available for purchase at the Conference will be the full documentary, not the promo as previously announced. This is therefore an exclusive opportunity for those attending the Conference to obtain the full version of Daniel's exceptional work, not widely available until 2010.

Plus we like our murders here...up to 199 ( underreported just like the asylum escapes are ) at the moment...so a convention held for the benefit of serial killer aficinados is right up our alley.

And then there's the Badlands....a tour or adventure for all Ripper liberals and sappy humanitarians (yecch....)to get their minds right. I am all for a grand meet-up on Friday evening. Doesn't it make sense to meet up at the King's Stores or a pub nearby? I leave that for you to decide. Because my wife Donna does not like curry, even if it is nowadays the cuisine of choice in the East End, the Monsoon would be doubtful for us frankly. :nono:

All the best

Hi Chris,

I'm certainly not trying to muscle into anyone's current arrangements - anyone who knows me will know the word 'muscle' is seldom mentioned in the same breath as me - but it sounds like people are meeting for curry in the afternoon.

I know the Kings Stores is busy early evenings with after-work drinkers, so perhaps a hazy plan of suggesting folk meet from 7pm at the Kings might be a nice idea...

Adam

You know me better than that, Adam. You can organise me any time - I just need Liza's written permission in triplicate first. You're doing a grand job as usual.

Actually, we just plan to go with the flow from late afternoon onwards - a couple in the Spit at some point (all together now: "where's the Spit?" :)), followed by a lovely long Monsoon session, by which time I'll probably be pissed and just go where everyone else goes.

Can't wait!

I might not be there for the afternoon curry. Not only am I of the school of thought that curries are quintessentially post-pub events (call me common!), but I also plan on visiting the new exhibition at the British Museum before I head to Whitechapel. The exhibition's had rave write-ups already, and tells the story of the last Emperor of the Aztecs. The plus-point is that, if my evening curry gives me gyp, I can genuinely blame it on Montezuma's Revenge.

Fellow fans of Mesoamerican art and archaeology are more than welcome to join me if they wish. At the exhibition, that is, not on the bog afterwards.

Hi all,

As Monty says, parts of Wolverhampton were filmed but sadly not all.

This time, Jeff Leahy will be on hand to video proceedings and once I have the footage I'll be preparing a DVD.

Anyone thinking of recording the speakers needs to obtain their permission beforehand. I'm sure there'll be no problem, but common courtesy and all that...

Finally, I originally planned to run a laptop link from the conference to a live feed on the conference site, but sadly the venue doesn't offer a broadband connection. I'll be uploading images to the conference's Facebook event page after each talk, so you'll be able to view almost live!

Jon, Adam's organised an impressive line-up- you've no need to worry about tech failures- there will be multiple cameras present anyway, irrespective of the official filming and photography. Not having time to ask questions? Don't worry. All the questions you have, will have been thought of by other guests, and I'm in no doubt there will be some questions asked that you haven't thought of, but wished you had. That's usually how these things go, and is perhaps the real fun of these occasions- the unexpected, unrehearsed elements of it... I have high hopes for this meeting, I think it's going to be very good considering the line-up of speakers, and the amount of new faces, such as yourself, that will be present. Could even be the best one yet. I hope it is the best anyway....

And I would like to add my own suggestion, which is that you serve the pie-and-mash with

I'm rather adventurous when it comes to food, but I have to draw the line at that! Not because of the look - which is splendid - but because I can't face the risk of even the tiniest lumps in my mash. Badly-cooked spuds - whether boiled, fried, baked or mashed - make me retch. Not too enamoured of thin gravy or parsley sauce for that matter.

Jellied eels on their own, however, I adore.

Not over keen on pie mash (as Londoners call it) but eels are very tasty, whether stewed, smoked or jellied.

Obviously we all like and dislike different foods, but I bet most people who screw their faces up in horror have never even given these a try. I respect anyone who tries something new and doesn't like it, but I find it very rude when someone sits there pulling a face or making comments while I'm eating something they don't like the look of.

Hi all

To help finance the trip for Donna and myself to attend the UK Conference, I will have a table at the event at which I will offer books and Ripper- and era-related ephemera. Below is a rundown of what I am offering. If anyone is interested in an item before I pack it in my bag to leave for Heathrow Airport on Thursday, let me know and maybe we can swing a deal. Thanks in advance for your interest!

Ripper ephemera and books:

1) Period postcard of the Police Seaside Home, Brighton.

2) Brass medallion for Queen Victoria's 1887 Jubilee.

3) Period fold-out postcard showing London Bridge, late 1890s.

4) Victoria veiled head penny from the 1890's. Quite worn as appropriate for the period. So would you be by now.
