In regard to post # 12 on that thread...one could view the Case from a position that there are two Whitechapel Murderers to consider. One, the letter writing fiend and the other, the faceless, anonymous, nondescript individual who likewise shook up the world. To get to the "point" of what I wanted to get to on another thread that I set up which has been locked, I think that it if a person accepts the notion that the Whitechapel Murderer did write the letter sent to the CNA, that that person looks at the Case with a slant...that he or she views the culprit in an entirely different way than someone who rejects the letter-writing Whitechapel Murderer theory....and probably the entire Case as well. Should anyone care to discuss this idea...which obviously is not something new,but seldom remarked on...please let me or SPE know. I do not want to disturb the flow of his Handwriting thread and will gladly set up a thread for commentary elsewhere. Thank you.
I now can grasp how SPE percieves the Case a little better than before to my benefit. At least I think I do. I believe what he is suggesting on that thread is that the Dear Boss letter is the starting point of these two Whitechapel Murderers...I know that this all sounds rather elementary, but nevertheless, I wanted to mention it because of the value of his thread in terms of how we approach the Case as a cadre....and in particular for the younger members of the Forums.

Yeah, let's fire this bad boy up. I'd like to discuss this as well as what I find more interesting: the letters the public wrote to the police naming suspects . That's a black hole that never gets discussed. It's one thing to dismiss the JtR letters as hokum (although I don't) but another to completely disregard what the letter writing public might have said. I think it would be a fertile field for a researcher.

Bob;
Just to make sure my comments are being understood here:
1. If someone believes that the Ripper wrote a letter, any letter and maybe even more than one, I, for one, have noticed that people in the community will try to match a missive to an individual from within the pantheon of suspects..
2. If someone disregards any of the letters being from the Ripper, they do look at the Case a little differently. Not necessarily in a "tremendously different" way...but differently. They simply don't focus on the letters, although they may view a suspect in the same way someone who does believe in the connectivity of a missive to the same suspect albeit with an obvious difference in what criterion they choose to view them by as being suspect worthy. In short, one can envision Suspect X as being the Ripper with or without any connection to a letter, but in some cases the suspect's possible connection to one of the missives is the starting point. I hope this is convoluted enough for you, because I couldn't say that again for all the ice in Iceland.
Now... what you are requesting is that we take or rather make a list from the available letters to the Press or police and examine what the content or who the content is referring to. I'm up for that. If you would care to begin making such a list, be sure to start a new thread and we can run with that.

Archaic and I will be keeping this thread updated for posts and threads from each week that other members seem to be enthused about or in fact may overlook due to the rapid turnover of threads and posts made.
Threads blend in with the rest of the boards after we sign out and sign in again. I'm afraid if you can't find a thread, there's only one thing to do to prevent that and that is to try to bookmark it somehow. What Archaic and I will do from now on is list threads and posts from the week ( Starting Friday, the 28th ) on this thread in unison, since people seem to be having trouble finding posts after a short period of time. I've been doing it, and I thought it was working out...but with two of us doing it, it might make things that much easier.
Thanks.

I think I just got drafted...
This is an effort that will get the best results if everybody participates, and it's very simple:
If you come across a thread, whether old or new, that you find interesting & would like to help keep it "alive" and readily visible to others, please just POST on it.
That will immediately bump it up onto the New Posts page, where it will be seen by other interested members so we can keep the discussion going.
We all know that once a thread slips from view it can be difficult to relocate, and "Out of sight" leads to "Out of mind".
>>You don't have to write a long post if you don't want to; if you simply post "This is interesting" or even the word "Bump" the effect will be the same- that thread will stay active.
I think this is especially important when we consider the time zone differences between members- for instance, I am on PST, 8 hours behind London... And look at Tel, posting all the way from Australia. He's like a year behind GMT... We are all on different schedules, but we can still maintain productive conversations by making a mutual effort to keep them "active".
You have all been officially drafted. :)
Thanks, guys! Archaic

However, one that stands out in my mind at the moment is the recent provision of the 1891 census by the one and only Rob Clack, found here :

Sometimes in life and in Ripperology....people that are too close to the action can't see the trees for the forest. I think that his post shows exactly that. None of the old "Gang of Four" noticed this or even bothered to investigate Vittoria Cremers claim of living at Mrs. Heilmann's in 1891...but thankfully Rob looked into it.
I suppose Cremers could have moved there after the 1891 census was taken....but at least we know now that she didn't appear on the census when it was taken in 1891.
A big thanks to Rob for taking the time and trouble of sharing this information.

Debra has brought up the equally interesting, if not more likely possibility, that Balfour was referring to William Grant Grainger all along.

The section of the Balfour-penned articles which mentions a fellow inmate of Balfour's at Parkhurst as being Jack The Ripper is what I meant to say in the previous poorly constructed post. My apologies. Balfour does refer to Le Grand in the article in another section.
