Yes...they are medical vials.
Yes..they are vials filled with mercury for the treatment of syphilis. Penicillin didn't become a reality until the 1920's due to the work of Fleming.
Nina and I are looking into researching, not acquiring, syphilis for an article at some point in time.
Some of the statistics on this disease make you wonder how Britain survived the 19th century...the British Century:high5:...simply mindboggling that the "AIDS of the 19th century" didn't kill millions.
Nina found an article from New York...which mentioned that over 50 percent of the hospital patients in one NY hospital alone were there for and had syphilis....and when it began to establish itself "back then", syphilis usually killed a person before it reached secondary stage. Forget tertiary stage, you were dead meat by the 2nd.

Nina found an article from New York...which mentioned that over 50 percent of the hospital patients in one NY hospital alone were there for and had syphilis
Hi Nina & How, I found this 50% figure too when I was researching London's Victorian-era Hospitals.
Even hospitals that were devoted to the cures of particular ailments had about a 50% syphilitic infection rate. With infection rates like that, I expect that hospitals were a prime cause of its spread.
And a chronic systemic disease would undermine anyone's health, so it was a very vicious circle.
Archaic
How Brown

Thanks Archaic:
Stan Russo wrote a book on the 50 most important individuals in recorded history...and the only Hungarian ( which figures, right?) on the list , Ignatz Semmelweis, was one I was a little surprised that Stan included...until I read about the man and his importance. Stan and I are also part Hungarians...which makes us twins.
He was responsible for the simple discipline of handwashing in hospitals. Some scientists such as Rudolph Virchow, were down on Semmelweis's insistence on handwashing to prevent the transmission of diseases. Hospitals, indeed, were actually killing factories prior to Semmelweis....and he proved it.
In the case of syphilis, I'm not sure if that disease can be spread unless it is disseminated through actual sexual contact or by blood. In any event, a 50 percent hospital figure in the mid to late Victorian Period tells me that it was spread even more severely on the street than we may have thought.
Archaic
06-21-2009, 07:12 PM
Hi How. Actually, one of the most awful ways Syphilis was spread was by mouth. There was an incredibly high incidence of newborn babies catching Syphilis from their Wet-nurse just in the course of suckling.
By the same token, there were cases of babies born with Congenital Syphilis actually infecting their healthy Wet-Nurses via mouth-to-skin contact. Sometimes the infection happened before the tell-tale sores were noticed by anyone. Though I remember at least one case of a Wet-Nurse who knew she was infected & had active sores but feared losing her job by disclosing it; the poor baby was quickly infected. The nurse was prosecuted, but the damage was done.
I have read old copies of The Lancet & the memoirs of 19th C. Doctors, & it was unbelievably common for a man to be treated for a virulent outbreak of Syphilis with doses of mercury, special soaking baths, etc, and then in a few weeks or months to be pronounced "free of the disease" by his doctor- and then the man PROMPTLY GETS MARRIED!!!
It's horrifying! So many young women must have been infected in this way.
In fact, Empress Marie of Austria-Hungary was infected by her husband with at least Gonorrhea & possibly Syphilis; she became very eccentric, anorexic, & traveled constantly to avoid both her husband & the Imperial Court- very awkward for Emperor Franz Joseph.
Their only son, Crown Prince Rudolph, was infected with every venereal disease under the sun & passed his infections on to his wife, Crown Princess Stephanie, rendering her sterile. (She even wrote about the excruciating pain & the shame she suffered from those infections.)
Rudolph's fear of going mad from Syphilis is considered to be a factor in his suicide at Mayerling.
Can you imagine how an innocent & sheltered young woman who had been infected by her own husband would feel?
And the terror she would feel at the thought of seeing her poor children infected? It's ghastly.
Archaic
How Brown
06-21-2009, 07:37 PM
It certainly was a bigger problem in the 19th Century than many people in 2009 might suspect,Archaic. I knew about the contact with the teats...but was thinking in terms of how adults got the disease.
Several "suspected" men in the WM...in modern times...have either had syphilis or been considered possibly having it.
What is also disturbing is that there was no cure for gonorrhea in 1888...which was a pretty serious sumbitch in the LVP and still is ( 700,000 cases per year..in the US alone...thats one out of 42 1/2 Americans:tape: )

Can you imagine how an innocent & sheltered young woman who had been infected by her own husband would feel?
And the terror she would feel at the thought of seeing her poor children infected? It's ghastly.
Hi Archaic,
It was believed at the time that it wasn't only the fact that Florie Maybrick found out about Jim's mistress and five kids that finished off the couple's marital relations; it was said that he became scared stiff (or should that be limp?) of making her pregnant again in case he passed on all sorts of nasties to the resulting offspring. I don't recall any of the concern being for Florie herself.
What always surprises me is the fact that he was steadily increasing his use of specific drugs that he understood to be the LVP equivalent of viagra (even if he also thought they were effective for sexually transmitted infections). The thought of him lying there, approaching 50, pumped full of viagra, with the young and fair Florie in bed in the next room, and leaving her untouched, is a difficult one to conjure with. That's some kind of masochism.
Love,
Caz
