... the "duck trousers" would've been a dead giveaway. I wonder if he completed the ensemble by wearing a pair of webbed shoes?

Thanks for putting up the hand bill Doug.
I wonder if this case was ever solved...or that it was all it was quacked up to be.
WHOA ! I just noticed the reward offered...man,thats a lot of money for 1817,isn't it?

Yeah, as the suspects would say, quite a lot of bread.

It seems£100 was for small fry.

Can you do the math on this and find out what 500 pounds ( I can't make that little "L" sign) was in today's currency?

Just done a bit of recce- .....looking about £100 values ........... would be £25,000 in 1817
Blimey! so £500 would be £125.000 !
Pennies beyond the dreams of avarice!!! and certainly beyond the dreams of anyone living inside Whitechapel and it's environs :)
OK in 1888 things weren't a lot different from 1817 -if you were on the shall we say 'lower levels'... not a lot changed there did it.....
You wouldn't be out looking for 4d in 1888!....bonnet or not if you had some 'coin' !

I would imagine Ferrets calculations would be about right..hell of a lot of money then......just as a matter of interest ,was an amount ever mentioned regarding the proposed or possible reward for jack the ripper? and remember that would be 70 years later.

Do rewards work?
We have some here sometimes and our American cousins use them quite often but you never really see if anyone has collected on them.

Rewards are offered all the time here for crimes. I'm sure a lot of them are paid out. I know of one right down the street from me where a girl was hit by a car and someone collected on that reward. We don't have nearly the number of CCTV devices in the States...and I'm sort of glad we don't.
Samuel Montagu, one of the good guys...a sort of tough egg too, the Jewish MP...offered a reward during the WM of 100 Pounds as reported in the Times on Sept. 12th,1888.
