View Full Version : Who is attending to conference?

Hi Everyone
Just wondered how many of the people from this forum are attending the conference in London?
As you know, I am photographing the event. I would like to have some responses from anyone who is planning on attending.
I am planning on arriving in London on the Friday before the conference and most likely will be staying at the Ibis Hotel on Commercial Street and would like to know if any of you are arriving Friday as well and if you would all like to meet up for dinner or just a chat on Friday evening?
I am hoping to get to know everyone a bit before the conference which will assist me in the photography over the weekend. If I know a bit about all of you, I can try to bring that out in the photos, or "get your best side" so to speak.
Feel free to email me personally or answer on the forum.
Looking forward to meetng all of you.
Gail

I am attending and arriving on Friday morning, with a view to getting to Islington for some research. I am not sure where I am staying yet, not sorted that aspect out!

Hello Gail

My wife Donna and I are booked for the Ibis, beginning Friday night, planning to leave on Wednesday. I havent booked our flight from the U.S. yet though so can't say when we will be arriving on Friday. As a result, we would be reluctant to make firm plans for Friday evening as of now.

Hi Gail,

I'll be around Friday night, am staying in the Travelodge on Liverpool Street.

Shall we take this a step forward and organise a forum meet up on the Friday night?

Would people like a meet up just to have a few drinks, or to meet up in the pub, then head for some food? Any good places for grub in the area?

Sam, whelks are seventh heaven.
Never mind that whelk stall. Buy your own, fresh, par cook 'em, 'bout five minutes, lashings of balsamic vinegar, shut 'em in a box for three hours, shaking box every hour for at least a minute, remove lid, sprinkle with Tibetan pink rock salt - French will do in a struggle - bung in microwave for exactly ten seconds, small fork, garlic mayonaisse, your oversized mouth, put one in other...
Enjoy.

Thanks for the culinary hints, AP, and for the timely - if inadvertent - reminder that my oversized mouth is due for its annual service. I'll get the AGA man in to scrub my flue immediately.

Now that I could go for, AP.

I've never managed to get through a whelk without feeling like Gonzo, my favourite Muppet character, trying to eat a rubber tyre (tire to those across t'pond) to the Flight of the Bumble Bee.

But give me pretty much any other seafood and I'll be in heaven before ye.

If anyone is interested Liza and I will be in the Monsoon at some point. But then we do get the "extra special" service there (don't ask what Liza has to do for that), so nowhere else quite hits the spot, or leaves the pocket virtually intact. Their Crab Bhuna with coconut rice is to die for. Five courses including tea or the best coffee I've ever tasted (other drinks extra), all for about seven (s)quid.

Hi Sam,

Ah yes, that makes sense:

’Twas on a Monday morning,
The whelk man came to call.
I said the wife might like a bit
So he opened up his stall.

’Twas on a Tuesday morning,
The wife was took quite queer.
I rushed her to the A&E
The doc said “What’s this ’ere?”

’Twas on a Wednesday morning,
She took a turn for worse.
The whelks had made her frisky
And she tried it on the nurse.

’Twas on a Thursday morning,
The wife came home to me.
“I’ll never have whelks again”, she said,
“It’s cockles and mussels for tea”.

’Twas on a Friday morning,
I called the wife selfish.
She left and moved in with the man
Who sold me her shellfish.

On Saturday and Sunday,
There was no food at all.
And to make things worse on Monday,
That bastar* whelk man came to call.

Love,

Caz

I'm at work on the Friday, but hope to come straight after. Chuck kids out the door and run to station! Should be in London by 4.30ish depending on the tidying up, etc (although get kids to tidy instead of teaching them?)!

I'm not staying over at the moment, but may change my mind nearer the time.

I'd quite like to eat first if possible as I don't eat lunch and the alcohol will go straight to my legs!x

Cripes Caz, I forgot to say take 'em outta the shells before the balsamics, otherwise they blow up in the microwave.
Those ten seconds just tenderise them perfectly. As does the balsamic.

Well it doesn't need to be lunchtime either, Suzikins. As I said, the 'special' is veeeeery elastic, stretching right through to 'unfeasibly late lunch' stage - just don't want to bust anything that good!!

Lenny is lovely, always territorially edging himself into the most comfy positions regardless of how packed the Spit* might be. In the winter, he spreads himself out within fur-scorching distance of the fire, across the top tier of a multi-layered wooden table meant for punters to put their beers on.

Morning Nats,

Well Liza and I are certainly not planning to 'lunch' until at least 4 or 5. And we may decide to eat later if we get stuck in the Spit - hic. I was just saying what our rough plans were and explaining the difference between Suzi's "Dinner from 6pm" (which would be menu prices) and our traditional late lunches which start from late afternoon. Hi
As I am new to the forum, I only know John Bennett since taking a walk with him a few weeks ago.
I would love to meet all of you prior to the conference so I can put faces to the photographs I take at the conference.
Would be happy to meet up for lunch at the monsoon. do they do vegetarian? I love Saag Panir but some of the local places in Suffolk don't do this dish.
I have my room booked at the Ibis already. Plan to check in on the Friday at noon.
Perhaps those of you staying there would want to get together and go to the monsoon? Let me know.

Would be happy to meet up for lunch at the monsoon. do they do vegetarian? I love Saag Panir but some of the local places in Suffolk don't do this dish.

Hi Gail,

Indeed they do. They have all the usual veggie dishes plus a good range of mouth-watering veggie specialities too. I often go veggie at the Monsoon just to try some of the main dishes out. The menu is huge and very varied. I could go there for another ten years and still not have tried everything.

Hi Stephen,

Just click here for more details of the spit:

It puts the spit in Spitalfields - and wets your whistle - in the nicest possible way.

Right, yes. As someone who has been involved in organizing two of the U.S. Jack the Ripper conventions, the first in Park Ridge, New Jersey in 2000, and the second in Baltimore, Maryland, 2002, let me say that is fine to have the enthusiasm to want to see there be a Canadian convention. But it takes a lot more than interest or enthusiasm to put together such an event. Are you prepared to do it? Or is someone else up there prepared to do it?

A start might be to begin a Canadian Ripper discussion site, possibly, and also contact the media about Ripper suspects with Canadian connections such as Cream and Tumblety. There are probably a number of other suspects that have some type of Canadian link if you research.

CONFESSION

I have never been to the Ripper sites in the East End. An awful confession to make for an editor of Ripperologist magazine, isn't it?!!! But it's nonetheless true. You can all see that I am a total fraud. . . Ripper editor, lyricist for a Ripper musical, authority to an extent on the Whitechapel murders, but. . .

I was supposed to link up with the late Adrian M. Phypers aka Viper for a tour of the sites some years ago but it didn't happen. So the upcoming London conference is my chance to go round all the sites, the famous ones and the not so famous (e.g., Swallow Gardens, anyone?????) and I am greatly looking forward to it, as you might anticipate.

All the best

Those unable to attend the conference-proper due to numbers are very welcome to turn up after the talks have finished, ie 7pm on Saturday and 6pm on Sunday.

You'll therefore have a chance to catch up with the delegates over a beer, no doubt tapping your feet to the music we'll be laying on!

Confession P.S., although I have not been round the Ripper murder sites, I have though been in the East End before, specifically to Petticoat Lane market, though that was years before I became actively interested in the Case, circa 1969. I took some Super 8 film of the vendors at the market. If I can dig out that film, that might be the entranceway to 108-119 Wentworth Model Dwellings, Goulston Street, in the background. . . If only I'd had the presence of mind to go round the sites with my movie camera back then, I might be marketing the film at the upcoming conference.

Hi Justin

I think in practical terms a meeting room in a hotel would be a better bet than a conference center, although I may be wrong. The hotel will accomodate the out-of-towners and is convenient for meals and talks. You certainly won't fill a conference center's main floor. Based on turnout for past US and UK Ripper events, you need to think in terms of a room accomodating up to 100 or so. The actual turnout may be only 60 attendees or so, more if you are lucky.

Hi Chris

There is No congestion charge at weekends, you only need to worry on friday. I would check with Ibis but I seem to remember that they do have parking.

Paul and I are leaving the car in a brick lane car park (there are several) and use a cab company called Addison Lee 0844 800 66 77. They are fast and reliable and I think cheeper than black cabs. (the last driver we had did talk a lot however)

I will only be providing a DVD which is not for general consumption but will be available through Adam and Andy.

You can however do me a massive favour in return. I need to know if I can burn a NTSC version that will play on American DVD players. That way I will know if we can supply copies to people State side.

This means creating a seperate master and I would be grateful if you could check it plays correctly for me?

Well said, Jimmy. Excellent talk by Mr Orme. I thought the conferences was a huge success. Congratulations to organizer Adam Wood, to M/C Colin Cobb, and to everyone else involved in what proved to be an excellent, informative, and entertaining weekend.
