I was just reading Peter Underwood's Jack the Ripper - 100 Years of Mystery and on page 114 of the 1987 hardback edition it mentions an article written by Leonard Gribble, which appeared in the January 1973 issue of True Detective magazine. The article is entitled "Was Jack the Ripper a Black Magician?"

Has anybody read this article and what conclusions, if any, did Mr Gribble arrive at?

Reading Odell's Ripperology I see that Gribble is said to have recieved the story from Crowley.

Mike:

Stephen Ryder had it for sale or auction back in 2006 at the Baltimore Convention. I couldn't read it as it was covered in plastic.

You may want to give him a buzz...if no one else has that issue.

Leonard Gribble publishes 'Was Jack the Ripper a Black Magician?' in the March, 1973 issue of True Detective, discussing the Dr. Stanley theory.

The theory I presented in my article was based on a lecture that Rumbelow presents during his walking tours of the Ripper murder sites. Rumbelow cites Leonard Gribble's theory in his book (p.170-71). Gribble's theory was first published in 1973. The article is entitled "Was Jack the Ripper A Black Magician?" This article was again published in the British "True Detective", in January 1988 issue. A friend in London provided me with a copy of this edition. I would be happy to send any Casebook reader a copy of the article who requests it!
