Following the current discussion I will post my most stupid newbie questions at casebook.org. But I still looking forward to having a lot of fun and learning a lot of new things about JtR.

P.S. I am sorry that my English is not as good as I wanted it to be, but - again - I try my best.

Your English is better than what I hear when I walk around Manhattan.

Don't be afraid to ask "stupid" questions here. We don't bite and sometimes a fresh eye kicks off a great discussion.

Dear Frank:

Congratulations on you working towards your thesis and PhD. Its good to know that someone else besides me is pretty smart on the site. I get lonely,buddy...

Don't hesitate to ask anything...you'll find out quickly that I know almost everything and am always happy to help.

Look in your email. I've sent you something.

Guten Tag.

Frank - just a heads up: How's "Philly enlargement" method doesn't work. You'd just be wasting fifty bucks.

Thanks to the time delay the day in Old Europe starts with a little bit of confusion. Maybe ripperology is like any field of research: Trust nobody! :peep:

But joking apart, thanks for that How! I will have a look at it as soon as my computer is willing to do a proper download again. First of all I will accompany my colleague to the disputation of his thesis. Afterwards - hopefully - we will have a nice day in Munich.

Hi All, Thanks How...

It seems that in 1884 Catherine Anne, the eldest daughter of Catherine Eddowes and Thomas Conway,
and living with Louis Philips and other children at 14 Townsend Street, Old Kent Road.
Also The 1881 Census shows Richard Eddowes,(my G.Grandfather), born June 1845 in Shropeshire Head of the family aged 35, an Ironnmonger, dwelling at the shop at 247 Old Kent Road.....

Only 200 Metres away!
I wonder if they were aware of each other?
More closely related than I thought?? Eddowes is NOT a common name!!

Just saying!!

Hi, Just joined (thanks How) I'm new to Ripperology in that I haven't read vast amounts of speculative theories, however that being said I have read about the case (who hasn't) and do have some thoughts/idea's that I wish to explore further! I'm not a fan of highly speculative conspiracy theories regarding the case that require complicated explanations and I tend to go down the occams razor route where ever possible. I came across the site while I was making a map of the possible routes JtR could of taken after the Stride murder and the Eddows murder and pondering the Baths on Goulston Street and their opening times/accessibility. I have 18yrs experience working on a locked psychiatric ward with highly disturbed patients but I currently restore old photographs, research my family history (some of which dates to 1880's Whitechapel) and bring up my 2yr old! I don't have a personal favourite suspect but my feelings are that his name cropped up at some point due to some misdeed either before, during or after the investigations and I think he was living or staying somewhere in the vicinity of Bell Lane. Versa ;)

Mr. Senger sent a message this morning and I'll post it here in order that someone might be able to assist Ron :

My name is Ron Senger. I am living in Los Angeles. I have a book that was published sometime around 1894. I believe that it is encoded with British Intelligence information. I have spent two years trying to educate myself on the Fenians and the various British spies working out of London throughout the 1880s and 90s. I read several blog entries on the JTR forum by people who may be able to help me with this puzzle. Here is a link to some flickr pictures of the book. http://www.flickr.com/photos/cadreamer/sets/72157625647575109/ There is one picture of a grave marker of an Irish politician who died alone in his apartment Christmas day 1889. There is also a picture of a dead fish with a date next to it. Could this be a history of recent assassinations? I think the fishing lures may be part of a code identifying Fenian groups in the US, England, and Ireland. I would like to contact somebody that may be interested on working on this with me. Could I get in contact with any of the Ripper enthusiasts on your site? Thanks for your time,

Nemo

Nice plates, but I don't see any indication of the presence of coded information

Hi All

Thank you for the welcome and I am very glad to be here. My name is Mark (bet you worked that one out already?) and live in the West Midlands of the UK. I have had an interest in Jack the Ripper for a long time although I am far from being an expert on the subject - in fact it has been a while since I last picked up a book on JTR so bear with me.

A little about me... I completed my BA (Hons) in Criminal Justice & Policing and then went on to complete an MSc in Criminology. As you can seen most crime-related things are of interest to me particulary serious organised crime - from an academic point of view I hasten to add! :pound:

Other interests include the Napoleonic Wars and the various campaigns fought during the Victorian period by Britain and her then Empire. I run two forums myself - the Napoleonic Wars Forum (recently launched) and the Victorian Wars Forum. I, therefore, know the pains and joys of running a forum well :D

Anyway, just a quick intro before I have a good delve around this great looking JTR forum.

Great to meet you Mark. I am both a Ripperologist and a historian on the War of 1812 between the United States and Great Britain. I'm going to be speaking at the 2011 Napoleonic Conference (http://www.napoleonichistoricalsociety.com/Conferences/2011_Baltimore.htm) to be held in Baltimore September 16-18. I am working on a biography of British Major General Robert Ross (1766-1814) with a historian from Rostrevor, Northern Ireland, the general's family's home village. You might know that Don Rumbelow also has an interest in the Napoleonic Wars.

Best Regards

Yes he was. He was mortally wounded before the Battle of North Point which dealt the British a blow before their planned assault on the city. My colleague in Northern Ireland, Dr. John McCavitt, has established a website on Ross at The Man Who Captured Washington — General Robert Ross (http://www.themanwhocapturedwashington.com).

The Grave Maurice
11-05-2011, 08:17 PM
Hard to describe the Mutter (there should be an umlaut over the "u", but I don't know how to do that) Museum. It's odd, sort of creepy, but fascinating. Sheila and I went there on the day before Hallowe'en and that was very appropriate. We've been in lots of museums, but this one is, in our experience, unique. It's composed of medical exhibits of all sorts and topics. Some of them are clay or wax casts, but a remarkable number are frighteningly real. Me, I liked the cast of Chang and Eng Bunker, the original Siamese Twins. There was also an excellent exhibit of photographs in the first room on the right as you enter. The building alone, the old College of Physicians, is worth the price of admission.

A lot of young people were there on the day we went, and we were impressed by the fact that, rather than being boisterous, they were almost reverential as they viewed the exhibits. You come away from it feeling rather sombre, but better informed.

Later, How, we went to McGillan's Olde Ale House in Drury Street for a Philly cheesesteak and a couple of pints produced by an excellent local microbrewery. I wish you had been there for that.

How Brown
11-13-2011, 06:41 AM
