Dear John:

Thanks for coming aboard...

If you like really witty one liners and sidesplittin' humor...then may I suggest you go and read the terrific stuff I dole out on a regular basis on the Weekly Caption Contest thread ?

You'll probably find it astounding that I don't charge for those replies to the weekly photo or caption. But I'm a nice guy and because we only have one member who actually graduated from a school aboard, the competition ain't as spellbinding. You'll find that you really have no choice but to marvel at my witticisms...in all honesty and humidity.

Hi How

I have a person who is interested in JtR and who is active on Casebook forums, who wishes to join this forum. She has had problems as she has been told the forum is closed to new members. Is this correct or is she looking at the wrong place/forum? If all is open and ok how shall I ask her to proceed?

Thanks and Happy New Year

Thanks very much for letting me know. Please have your friend contact me....at the email address found on every post I make:

donston1888@aol.com

The site is open and we welcome virtually everyone to it, but we do not have a registration process like Casebook and most other sites do.

Let me illustrate something for one and all and I'm glad you brought it up.

If someone went over to JTR Studies, the mini site we also operate, they would find around 240 members over there.

Actually, there are only 8 or 9 real members....the other 230 plus registered members are spammers and internet parasites.

Since I do not have time to kibbitz around with these phony registrations here...and since they HAVE been a problem ( Ask Chris George )...i made the decision to eliminate the normal registration procedure and handle it myself.

Thanks again Debbie:hug:

Hi Howard et al.

Yes Spammers and Robobots really are a terrific problem on the Internet which is why reason many sites are instituting safeguards to make sure the "visitors" are legitimate. There are too many scammers and vandals intent on invading websites. As Howard indicates, I know the problem first hand having had to spend considerable time as a monitor on a couple of other websites removing and banning unwelcome visitors. Ugh.

Cheers

Here's the link to the other site:

http://studies.jtrforums.com/index.php (http://studies.jtrforums.com/index.php)

Only 8 of the 240 or whatever the number is are real people. Its a lot of spammers and bots. We left the registration "on" over there, we don't do that here.

The Chat Room Forum is on the main page. Its easy to locate.

Hi
Not sure if you have a place for newbies to introduce themselves - couldn't find it.
Please allow me to introduce myself - as Mick Jagger once said
Actually I am not the devil, but the amount of abuse I have taken in a certain other message board you would think that I was Old Nick himself. Anyway, enuf was enuf and some cyber JTR friends I respect recommended I get myself over here. I am not strictly a newby as I have had a go at the caption competition a few times, thgough was never clever enough to walk off with the $64,000 prize
I've also probably stuck this in the wrong place but i am assured that this can be sorted without my IQ and parentage being publically questioned (unlike elsewhere)
Anyway my name is Roger and I am an alcohol - no sorry wrong forum - and I have actually been interested in JTR for a number of years - more than I want to admit to - so I do have more tahn a passing knowledge but I am not an expert due to the fact that I have other intersts (and a life) as well
However having taken (early I stress !!!) retirement I now have more time to indulge my interests so you may well soon hear more of me with my funny little games

Hi Rog,

You realise you will now be severely spanked in your absence for mentioning previous spankings. Repeat after me: "Nobody ever gets spanked", because if you claim otherwise you will get spanked even harder next time. :suspicious:

And now I will be severely spanked - as usual - for seeing naked spanking emperors everywhere.

I find having a go at the caption competition, and in particular having a go at Howard Brown, takes the sting out of one's punishment. :eyebrows:

Love,

Thank you warmly, everyone. I must admit it is somewhat surreal, and a tremendous honor to be sharing the boards with some of the foremost thinkers in Ripperology today. I have listened to you all on Rippercast with Jonathan on numerous occasions. I am so glad to be here with you all, but at the same time, it brings into focus just how "dwarfed" I am compared to the rest of you in terms of my knowledge base. I could easily find myself sifting through the intracasies of some of these forum posts for 6 or more hours a night, but good God!- my "real" job would likely suffer the consequences.

Please tell me: just out of curiosity, I am wondering how one goes about being a researcher -Ripperologist - and makes this his/her career? There are months when I can barely surpass paying the mortgage! So for you more "famous" ripperologists, where does the living come from? Is it strictly in publishing books, or doing seminars, professorship, or do some of you work regular jobs, as I do? Just very curious...
Thanks, and thanks again for allowing me to partake in this wonderful quest for answers.

CC...I wish I didn't have to work a regular job. Like many people here, I work 40 hours a week. I spend 60 hours on the boards or looking for articles...or reading peripheral/related materials. I wake up thinking about Ripperology and hit the sack thinking about it.
I'm very lucky to be married to a Ripperologist.

We're glad you're here,buddy.:thumb:

After 35 years of studying the case, the peripheral cases such as that of the Cleveland Torso Killer, and American politics, I have concluded that crime DOES pay. That is how I am able to get by at present without working.

Otherwise, I formerly had a regular job and hope to once again soon. There is no money to be made in ripperology that one can live on, unless you own and conduct one of the big-name Ripper Tours.

Easy: become a university student, spend three years studying the case doing very little other work, and then rush all of your actual studying for the last month before your exams!

Thanks! Am anxious to add to my knowledge of this case.

Currently have read only 1 1/2 books on the subject...Jack the Myth by A. P. Wolf and 1/2 of Cornwell's Portrait of a Killer, so I'm a complete neophyte, but leaning much more strongly towards Cutbush as the killer rather than Sickert. Just an early opinion based on my very limited familiarity.

I'm also quite interested in maps of the Whitechapel area during the time period, because, well, just because I love maps. So, if anyone could point me in the direction of a good, high-res download along those lines I'd be grateful!

Thanks again for the welcome,

May I suggest you purchase the Ultimate Sourcebook by Stewart Evans and The Facts by Paul Begg...who are participating members of JTRForums...

There are several other books ( Not attempting to slight those books or authors you mentioned in the slightest) which will cover a wider range of the Case than most and the two I mentioned are at the top in terms of coverage.

No cheesesteaks in sight, but he did have a can of Carling while on the Thames tour.

I'm surprised that they made more than one can of that crap. The first sip I took of it was like drinking liquid hairspray. If you haven't tasted it, you have not missed anything. I can actually remember the taste of that horrible stuff all these years later. Its that impressive in a negative way.
I remember a backyard gig once...about 35 years ago or so...and the guy assigned to buy beer ( beer in cases was pretty cheap back then) brought back what he thought was a steal...a case of Polski Piwo ( piwo is beer in Polish...and coincidentally, "sor" is beer in Hungarian ) and a case of that Carling bilge.
It was a travesty. We had to send someone else out for different beer.

Men,

A few years ago, Carling Black Label was rebranded as Carling, although I gather that the "Black Label" part of the name survived in some places overseas. I think I remember reading that Carling is the most popular lager in the UK, and I, for one, back it as totally inoffensive and therefore unlikely to cause biliousness, disorientation or other challenging effects. It is a good beer for drinking when one wants the feeling of being a bit under the weather, but not susceptible for admission to the local casualty ward.

They now have a "Taste-Lock Can", which is meant to keep the flavour in, but experimentation tells me that this is pushing the charade a little far: there was no flavour in there in the first place. Still, I can whole-heartedly recommend it for anyone who wants an inoffensive, consequence-free pint.

Regards,

Mark

Howdy Boss,

I have heard a bit about it in passing. I live in Springfield but I'm originally from Iowa. I have heard quite a bit about the 1912 Axe Murders in Villisca Iowa.. That was on the western side of the state and I am originally from FT Madison which is on the eastern side, right on the Mighty Mississippi River. Fort Madison was originally a fort from 1807-13 that became a river town with all that being a River town entails. But at least we're not as rowdy as some of the others.:pray2: So that's about it for exciting things I know. But now you got me curious so I will see what I can dig up about that Tornado.

The Welsh are taking over! Welcome Nath, you shall find they are a friendly and convivial bunch over here - in the traditional and also quite often in the euphemistic sense.

See you about.

Thank you, for your welcome!
Maybe I can use this first post to introduce myself! I am living in Garmisch, which is a small town in the German Alps. Due to this circumstance I am a little bit cut off from libraries and other institutions for a proper research. But I try to follow the interesting discussions on this forum and on casebook.org (as well as the German jacktheripper.de). As I like to have them in a searchable document, I am transcribing articles posted in this forum. Maybe some of you like searchable documents, too. So do not hesitate to contact me if there is a special article you would like to have transcribed. Please don't be angry if that may take some time, but I am at an final stage of my PhD thesis, so time is rare. And, as I am human and English is not my mother tongue, I cannot guarantee that they are 100% free of typos. But I try my best!
I am interested in the Jack the Ripper-case for two years now, so that I regard myself still as a newbie. Following the current discussion I will post my most stupid newbie questions at casebook.org. But I still looking forward to having a lot of fun and learning a lot of new things about JtR.

P.S. I am sorry that my English is not as good as I wanted it to be, but - again - I try my best.

Hello Frank

Very glad to meet you. You might know that Christian Jaud, a schoolmaster in Bavaria, is a regular visitor here as well. I join with Robert Linford in congratulating you on your command of English. As an editor of the English language, I can detect nothing to criticize.

Cheers
