View Full Version : Site Attachments Issue

Folks...

I've spent considerable time recently eliminating thousands of posts ( almost 10,000 ) and threads in order to make way for newspaper reports and audio media related to the Case.

We have no issue whatsoever with the placement of newspaper reports or anything germane to the WM...but due to the need for space, please refrain from putting up superfluous attachments that could be easily linked to Flickr or whatever the hell that site is called.

Caption contests need attachments and often, threads such as the one Tim started on The Creeper need a photo for reference. There is no need to load the thread up with additional attachments...which,again,can be easily linked to sites which allow attachments.

On Individual Forums, there's no problem with personal photos, since I can resize photos for each and every member.

I am going to remove some of the recent attachments out of necessity, not out of spite, since we need the space.

Thanks for your understanding.

Could someone post easy to follow directions on how to do this for the technologically challenged like myself ?

If people cannot figure out how to minimize photos or attachments, then please do not add photos until you do. If your attachment is Ripper related, I will be more than happy to undertake the readjustment of the photo or newspaper article in question. I will not do so if it involves superfluous photos of cats, movie posters, or materials unrelated to the Whitechapel Murders Case.....

If someone who has Flickr would please contact Suzi or Robert or anyone else in need of figuring out how to use Flickr...please do so.

Thank you.

Thank you.

The good news is I've got a Flickr account and have been using it to stash various photographs. Mostly tasteful nudity.

The bad news - and I suspect there's a few of us - is I can't figure out how to post them here so as to reduce the load on the server. I believe Magpie provided some guidance, but it flew over my pointy little head.

Going try this myself:

According the faq's:
To include an image that is not uploaded as an attachment and is located on another website, you can do so by copying the full URL to the image, (not the page on which the image is located), and either pressing the 'Insert Image' icon or by typing before the URL and after it, ensuring that you do not have any spaces before or after the URL of the image. You can insert pictures from your albums (?) in this way too.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2581/3736034968_0907615768.jpg?v=0

Ok got it working,

You need to right click on the image itself on your flickr page and select copy image address. Windows and other browsers will be different but you should find something similar.
Then go to this site and start typing your message as usual. When you are ready to include your picture type in the message window "paste in the address copied from flickr"
So it should look something like:
{img}http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2581/3736034968_0907615768.jpg?v=0{/img}

I've changed the [] brackets for curly ones so that the writing could be seen and the picture would not be displayed again. Yours should have [] brackets.

The address in the grab the link on the flickr page does not work for this.

Hope this helps.

Bob:

Thats a good point you raised ........

Its not worth being frustrated over technical issues...since people go out of their way to assist each other here. Thats a very prominent element of the community, the helping hands out there...and it really, to say it once more, is unnecessary for anyone to worry about the attachment sizes since I have said it several times that I will be happy to help people out...like they have helped me out with stuff.

Look at how Lyn Hollifield helped me with that screen capture function. Now,I can't stop using it for newspaper articles....and it has helped the site significantly. All I had to do was...drumroll....ask !

How does one go about doing that ?

Sir Robert, that's one even I know how to do!

I have Picasa as my photo system; all I do is open it & whenever I am on a web-page I want to photograph in its entirety (or a photo, etc) I just hit the "Print Screen" button on the right of my keyboard, and voila....

Everything on the screen is captured in one photo & saved in Picasa under the heading "Screen Captures" From there it can be enlarged, cropped, copied, read, whatever.

The Print Screen Button should be below the Power button, near the Home button.
(I have Windows XP, but I think this works on any system.)

Good luck, Archaic the Suddenly Technically Savvy :)

Bob:

Try this...

1. Lets copy this post that I am writing right now.

2. Look on your keyboard for " prt scr "

3. Push the button

4. Go to Start on your left hand side of the computer

5. Go to Accessories

6. Go to Paint

7. At the top of Paint hit "edit"

8. Then hit "paste'

9. This page will come up

10. Underneath the word "Edit" is a little square...which when you place the cursor over it, will say "select".

11. Push that button.

12. Then go to whatever you want to copy and encompass the space with the cursor

13 After you encompass it...right click on the area...then hit "copy".

14. Then go back up top to "File". Left click on File.

15. Then hit "New". You will get a prompt that asks you whether you want to save or "don't save" or cancel.........hit "don't save".

16. Then hit Edit when the new page opens up...

17. Then hit "Paste"

18. Then hit "file"....and hit "save as"

19. When you are asked where to save it to, save it on desktop...give your page a name.

20. Then close it out...go back to desktop...and open that sumbitch up.

21. There ya go.

Lets keep in mind our request to keep attachments relative to Ripperology and in regard to Individual Forums, lets not pile on attachment after attachment on a subject if one will suffice. Be considerate.

I can't keep spending time resizing the attachments. Thats the responsibility of the individual who has the attachment in the first place. I will always be glad to help resize as I have said over and over again, but not when 120 Kb attachments get put up and then I have to stop researching and resize them down to 10 Kb which I have done a few times today. Enough is enough and I do not want to have to limit access to some people when it comes to attachments.

An attachment from Robert Clack or SPE is of value in research...whereas an attachment of a doorknob is simply unnecessary.

Last warning.

The easiest solution is for the great majority of us to go the Flickr route; no muss, no fuss and there is no burden on the Forums. The photos appear here as if you had uploaded them.

I could be wrong but I believe Casebook now requires such workarounds.

Thanks to Bob and Tim for the additional facts of the matter. I didn't want to publicly embarrass or hurt anyone's feelings, so I removed your posts, but its as if I am spending hours taking attachments off only to have someone immediately fill the space back in with photos which can cause an overload to the bandwidth...and then it could cause problems with the server. Its rude is what it is...and today is the last day for this sort of thing. I hope this is understood when I have to limit someone or some people from applying attachments effective immediately. Sorry:kiss:

I'd much prefer seeing attachments that are germane to an Individual Forum or Ripperology than attachment after attachment of superfluous junk...and the bottom line is that its junk. Unnecessary to me and a potential problem when it comes time for us to pay for the additional bandwidth.

One good practice to adhere to, whether one uses a separate image host or not, is not to save files as bitmaps (i.e. avoid the ".bmp" extension), because they're "lossless" and therefore rather large. Instead, save as compressed jpegs and, if colour isn't strictly necessary, in grayscale mode. I often do this, and (as a Brucie Bonus) shrink them to a smaller physical size too - provided they're still readable, of course :)

Most basic image processing software will do these sorts of things quite easily, but if anyone wants any further advice, I'll be happy to help.

I think it's best if we allow posters discretion to upload appropriately sized images of significant interest to Ripperologists. That's my two cents. Actually, we're really only having a problem with a few members.

Here's a question: what happens to the images here if Flickr was to go down for the count in the future ? I presume they'd be "lost" to the Forums.

Thanks for the suggestion and I will keep it in mind. Thank you pardner !

Bob:

I'm guessing that the attachments that in your hypothetical situation get zapped into the ether...would be gone forever.

My suggestion is to either store attachments you find on a disc or in a folder on your computer and/or at some point put them on an inexpensive thumb drive.

I also agree with Bob's sentiments. I'm not trying to be Draconian because some of the attachments with little or no connection to the Case are funny or interesting and I can always go back and archive them as I have done with all the previous caption contests. Thats not an issue.

The only issue, once more and for the final time, is the rash of attachments that take up space on threads that eat away at bandwidth. Several requests have been made and at times its like the request is being ignored intentionally.

Back to the Ripper studies and lets drop the issue as I believe the message should finally sink in with one and all. Thank you.

As the renegade posting of large unripper-related attachments continues, please be advised that perpetrators may find themselves moved into a Restricted Access category, wherein attachment posting privileges do not exist.

At some point ,because of the site improvement ideas that I have, we might remove avatars as well to condense the space.

Some may wonder why the practice of transcribing the articles ceased and the reproduction of the snippets became prevalent as it is now.

Other than myself and occasionally Nina, there have been virtually no other individuals available or willing to transcribe for the site. At some point, I will have to go back and transcribe all those jpegs I have added to make space. Running the site and answering over 70 p.m.'s a week takes time, so I don't have the time to do that now.

If, at any point...someone ( Bell ? ) would like to help out and transcribe the (already posted) articles that have been appearing, please let me know. It would be a nice gesture and a good way of using our time ( Bell ? ) wisely.

Thanks.

Hi Tim,

Just curious, but have you not sent PMs direct to the 'perps' about this? They may not have seen the various messages that have been posted, or perhaps they haven't grasped that your warnings apply to them. But they could hardly ignore a direct and to the point private message, surely?

At least one poster was banned from casebook for posting unrelated pics there and then having a hissy fit at the admin when they were deleted to save precious space. So I don't understand why anyone would risk it here, even if they still don't grasp why they have been asked to stop.

Love,

All that is in Howard's capable hands, Caroline, and he has been PM'ing up a storm besides posting public announcements.

The site has grown enormously, to the point where we now have over 440 Mb of attachments alone. Anything over 300 Mb makes it impossible for anyone to back up the site through conventional means.

I understand Casebook's position, as this problem is cumulative and they have about 10 times the posters that this site does. Howard is trying his best to trim it down sufficiently where we can back it up ourselves AND also save all of the old stuff to CD/DVD. But we are finding that attachments can appear faster than they can be archived, so this is a problem.

Problem is, people have become spoiled here up till now, and old habits die hard.

Suffice to say, irrelevant attachments will have a short shelf life from here on. But we're on the case and will eventually work out a long-term plan of some kind.

No fear of bans over this unless someone goes postal over a prize photo being edited or deleted. But I don't expect that here.

Thanks for asking.

How Brown

Tim:

In light of the fact that our attachment volume is 50 percent over what we would like it to be....I will have to go back to transcribing articles...I may not be able to put more than one a night on the boards, as I had been doing at least 1,000 Kb worth per night for the last month. It would be appreciate if someone with spare time started transcribing, along with me of course, the excerpts and articles which I have already placed on the Forums.

I would like everyone other than those people I mention shortly to cease from adding personal attachments until I get the site down to nearly 300 MB. Even though I have removed over 12,000 posts and scores of attachments and threads...its still a big problem as you can see by Tim's previous remarks.

Two problems arise when we keep adding attachments.

One, the load on the bandwidth...which everyone has heard and is probably sick of hearing as much as I am for whining about it. Too much= Crash.

Two, the fact that WE...Tim or myself, cannot ,or could not if need be in my case, back up the site in case of a crash or disruption to the server.

We know we can't have that...all of us do.

So....from this point on, and I'll gently remind all those who may not see this post....as we do not want to insult or embarass anyone,sincerely.... only the following 9 people are able to add attachments until I get things squared away. I did not want to put this policy in force as if I was doing it behind anyone's back...since I am dead serious about the overload we face.

Mr. Evans... SPE
Colin Roberts
Robert Clack
Myself
Tim
Sir Bob
Mike Covell
Big Jon Rees
and of course, Debbie Dobbins.

...and this was my decision and mine alone, so if you have any questions or disagreements with the policy, refer them to me.

Be aware that I am also going to disable avatars immediately as well.

If anyone has an attachment, other than the five individuals named above, that is Ripper related, please contact me first and I will take care of the matter promptly and courteously.

Thanks for your understanding

I would like everyone other than those people I mention shortly to cease from adding personal attachments until I get the site down to nearly 300 MB.

Hey How and Tim : just to clarify to people - does this apply to individual forums as well ? I ask because you/we had previously exempted them and I want the new rules to be crystal clear to everyone.

Bob:

Yes. That applies to every area of the Forums for now.

Thanks for reminding me.

Suzi, your better off signing up with photo bucket. It's a lot easier then flickr which I've had trouble with.

Thanks to everyone who has been courteous enough to use Photobucket or Flickr or any other method of placing Ripper related attachments on the boards since I began this "Long March" from over 410 Mb....to the point where we are now under 100 ( 99.89 to be exact) Mb.

I still have to do those 99 in the next 55 days to make the New Years Day deadline or goal of ZERO. Despite it sounding easy, the 99 Mb are comprised of a lot of our newspaper attachments which are small ...and some that are of peripheral interest...

Total Attachments Left For Me To Convert : 2,491
Disk Space Used : 99.89 MB

So while we have the load down ( Over 76 percent less than when I started this...) lets still try our best to use alternatives to bitmap and jpegs that are NOT Ripper related. All those which are Ripper related including for an example, Natalie Severn's photos of London...just to name an example...are okay.

Thanks very much.
