Thread serving a two fold purpose...
First ! To provide those Conventioneers sober enough with a place to share their random thoughts and observations....a sort of running commentary.
Secondly ! In order that our very own and special Babe In The Woods...Big Jon... is kept on the straight and narrow...please update this thread so we know what the hell he's up to.
Thank you.

Hello all,
Yes, I did indeed fall asleep on the train and woke up by Reading. No I haven't eaten any beans, but tomorrow morning that will probably change!
I popped into the Sherlock Holmes museum for a bit, took some nice photos and met Watson.
Then I got a bit lost looking for a shop. I have now finally managed to reach my hotel and am having a cup of tea before heading out to find the others (presuming they haven't done an Eddowes and been arrested of course!)

Somebody had the foresight to write Jon's name and destination on a scrap of paper and pin it to his shirt
with a "Please Return" request, didn't they?
Didn't they?????

So far..he's nodded out on a train...plans on eating beans and then has the affrontery to jump right into a convention full of unsuspecting, decent people with that awful cargo in tow.
THIS is why we put out the all points bulletin on Jon....THIS is why I was so worried about him running amok in the Big Smoke !
Hopefully others will pipe in with their updates on him for me.:frusty:

I only pray to the Great Anthroproflatuent Being in the sky.. that Jon will extend similar courtesies to those at this momentous occasion...after all he is representin'.
Bob Anderson.... we have no worries about. Its almost Midnight over there....he's three sheets to the wind if I know him at all.

Morning all.
Eduardo, Andy, Lisa, myself and our very own Robert Anderson popped down Brick Lane for a curry.
Wound up East End wandering for around an hour after finishing because we couldn't remember where the hotel was!
Eventually got in at about 1.30am.

Conference is over for the day, we've been sent back to our hotels to freshen up (cos we all smell apparantly!)
Mj trows talk was good, he addressed Robert Mann and said he only wants to invigorate debate and realises its shortcomings.
Gareth raised the point that because of this he has learnt new things so the whole exercise was by no means wasted.
And most importantly, Paul Begg provided some information that means it is possible for Mann to have left the workhouse! So today has certainly been eventful.
I also interviews Trow and Colin Cobb (MC) but tech difficulties prevented me speaking to Chris George yet. Ill interview him tomorrow along with the other speakers and Adam.

And most importantly, Paul Begg provided some information that means it is possible for Mann to have left the workhouse!
"most importantly" ?????
Judging from his assertion that "the expanding Borough of Stepney absorbed Mile End Old Town in 1901, so, when Swanson wrote nine years later, Mile End Old Town Workhouse was Stepney Workhouse" ("Jack the Ripper: The Facts", by Paul Begg, pg. 378); I would contend that Paul Begg knows very little about the English Poor Law and its accordant guidelines for Workhouse administration.
Until this "information" is revealed to those of us not in attendance, at today's presentation, I will assume that it is bogus!
Big Jon
10-24-2009, 03:10 PM
Now what an attitude to take, Colin.
The information is that Paul has press reports which show Mann had permission to leave the workhouse on certain occasions, to collect bodies etc.
So while still unlikely it removes the element of immposibility.
How Brown

… Mann had permission to leave the workhouse on certain occasions, to collect bodies etc. That basically goes without saying!
Mann apparently continued to reside in the Whitechapel Union's Charles Street / Baker Street facility for some twenty four years, following its conversion from Union Workhouse to Union Infirmary, in 1872. The fact that he was seemingly never relocated to the newer Whitechapel Union Workhouse, South Grove, Hamlet of Mile End Old Town, is indicative of his having been given certain infirmary-based responsibilities (e.g. mortuary attendant), by the Guardians of the Whitechapel Poor Law Union.
Having been, perhaps, a trustworthy and loyal servant; Robert Mann may have been granted a certain degree of passage, with which he was able to occasionally 'come-and-go' …
Having been a mortuary attendant in the autumn of 1888, he had obviously been granted certain responsibilities. Perhaps he had also been granted a certain degree of passage, with which he was able to occasionally 'come-and-go'. But he most certainly would have been held accountable for his 'comings-and-goings'; and it is absolutely unthinkable that he would have been granted any sort of passage between the hours of midnight and 6:00AM.--- It should be noted that I made the above comment nearly three weeks ago. ---
While fulfilling his responsibilities as mortuary attendant, or enjoying some sort of 'liberty' from the confines of the Whitechapel Union Infirmary (which he may or may not have been granted); Robert Mann would invariably have been held strictly accountable for his whereabouts, at all times, by the Guardians of the Whitechapel Poor Law Union.
So while still unlikely it removes the element of immposibility.I emphatically disagree! I wholeheartedly believe that the "element of impossibility" is at this point, unscathed!
And most importantly, Paul Begg provided some information that means it is possible for Mann to have left the workhouse! ...
Until this "information" is revealed to those of us not in attendance, at today's presentation, I will assume that it is bogus!
If we are dealing with actual press reports, then I am sure that the "information", itself, is not "bogus". But the notion that such "information" suggests that "it is possible for Mann to have left the workhouse", is completely bogus!
Do we wish to uncover the facts? Or are we willing to swallow just about anything that is thrown in our direction, by supposed 'authorities'?
... he addressed Robert Mann and said he only wants to invigorate debate ...… by stirring up a crock of fecal matter!

Thanks, Jeff. So you were the one who only wrote the words BERNER STREET at the bottom of the sheet in yellow felt tip? Missing the heading HENRIQUES STREET / BERNER STREET (STRIDE) third from the very top of the options?
Don't worry if so - someone ticked 23 of the options though I specified a maximum of 10 and also asked if we could walk into the London Hospital as part of the tour and go through their archives!

Looking forward to Philip Hutchinson's Ripper tour this morning. Never having done a Ripper tour before I was startled yesterday morning to realize that where I am parked in the White's Row parking garage is right next to Mary Jane Kelly's murder site in Miller's Court. I knew it as soon as I walked up White's Row and saw the Providence Row Night Hostel in Crispin Street, which stood at the end of Dorset Street. That's only a few hundred yard's from King's Stores in Widegate Street along an ancient passage.
Master of Ceremonies Colin Cobb did a great job yesterday as M/C and Elvis impersonator in the evening! Donna and I enjoyed the buffet supper and drinks. Lindsay Sivitar did an excellent version of "All that Jazz" and yours truly got up and sung "It's My Life" in the karaoke part of the evening.
The opening talk by Alice McKenzie by Stuart Orme was excellent and my talk on police activities between MJK and McKenzie (ie first 6 months of 1889, essentially) went well. M J Trow's talk on the torso crimes was excellent too. . . he did not argue strongly for Robert Mann as a suspect and was humble in saying that he was only putting forward Mann as another possibility. Philip Hutchinson's talk on his newly discovered Dutfield Yard photograph was a detailed and fascinating detective story as he documented how he has verified that the photograph is definitely of the yard and how he is narrowing down on identifying the lady photographer responsible for the view.... evidently a wealthy American woman able to afford a Cook's Tour of Europe in 1900.
Looking forward to seeing some photographs on here as many have been taken. Tomorrow morning I am looking forward to driving out to Isleham, Cambridgeshire, and meeting the eminent Mr Stewart Evans and his wife Rosie. Stewart and I were supposed to meet in 2001 at the time of the Bournemouth convention but unfortunately the death of his brother occurred about the same time and prevented the meeting. My other regret was that I never got to meet the late Adrian Phypers who I had also been scheduled to meet for the Ripper tour I will be getting today!
All the best

Indeed, the annoying this is though, I've only just got over the "freshers flu" that goes around everyone during the first month of uni.
It's normally when I spend significant time with people from other parts of the country/world I get it.

WOW.
But you'll be relieved to know that I've diagnosed their illness, Philip.
It's called Choreomania and was a common affliction in the Middle Ages.
Also known as Dancing Mania, it was frequently caused by LSD-like substances such as Ergot
growing in spoiled bread, grains etc.
Hopefully nobody at the convention consumed anything involving fermented grain...
if they didn't, they should recover.

Having just completed Mei Trow's lecture, and lets face it guys you did rather let him off the hook,
I was somewhat interested in Mei's suggests that the Pinchin Street Torso was More likely to have been an organized killer and Norma's input about Chapman.
One of the main reasons for dismissing Chapman as Jack, is because he dosn't match the pattern of a disorganized serial Killer. Chapman was a poisoner.
However Chapman is a serial killer living in Cable Street? Surely a good suspect for the Pinchin Street Torso?

Having just completed Mei Trow's lecture, and lets face it guys you did rather let him off the hook,
First, let me say how nice it was to see you again.
Now, regards Trow: I think that at the heart of the matter is the simple fact that many "Ripperologists" are gutless Internet toughies. Oh, they'll slash Trow up on the boards, alright, but in person ? Cowards.
There is also the point that I don't think any of us had read his book at that point.
And last but not least, his talk was on the Torsos, not Mann. And he was rather self effacing from the get go on his Mann theory.
I was somewhat interested in Mei's suggests that the Pinchin Street Torso was More likely to have been an organized killer
Agreed. The placing of the Torsos, the care taken in dividing them up, etc etc point to a Man with a Plan.

Absolutely. Of course, he did take a gratuitous slap at Americans, which I almost called him on when I was groveling for his autograph on my first edition.
Reminded me quite a bit of Jeremy Beadle. He'd make a great Conference M.C. methinks. (Not in any way to slight Mr. Cobbs.)

Hi Guys
Don't get me wrong I found Mei Trow quite engaging but from a production point of view a little more controversy would have made better tele.:fencing:
That said, I noticed Howie was trying to get him on the boards and certainly having just edited his lecture he is the one person I'd like to ask more questions of....particularly the end conversation that opened up some interesting comments on Chapman as the torso murderer (via Norma).

Jeff, one of the more weird things about Chapman is how he manages to be near not just one but several murder sights or places of interest regarding the 1888 and 1889 crimes!Cable Street is the most definite as its in both the Post Office Directory and was stated by Stanislaus Baderski as being where Chapman/Klosowski was living in 1889 -just before he married his sister Lucy in October 1889. So the Pinchin Street Torso was discovered just opposite from where he was living in September 1889.
George Yard is another such crime scene coincidence -it is where Wolff Levisohn stated he met Chapman-see page 201, Trial of George Chapman- "working in a [barber] shop under the White Hart public house,89 High Street,Whitechapel,in 1888."[this is a verbatim report from transcripts of police Court proceedings on Wednesday,7th January,1903].I have written it out in full .Also I think I said page 202 instead of 201 at the conference!
But also Jeff,Mrs Radin was living at 70 West India Dock Road 1888 which was one of the addresses Chapman lived at in 1888 [ he was known to her then as Klosowski]-he lived there for five months with her and her family. This 70 West India Dock Road is simply a short continuation of the Burdett Road/Farrance Street junction where Emma Smith was last seen on the night of her murder.According to inquest testimony ,Emma was last seen by Margaret Hames [the friend she was soliciting with] ,chatting to a respectably dressed man in a dark suit and wearing a white scarf. So many coincidences!
Cheers Jeff,
Norma

Since I am trying to get Mr. Trow to participate here on the site...I'm going to delete that last post and request that we wait until he commits one way or the other...before we continue any further on ths subject. Besides, there may some more of us out here who have questions for him we'd like answered .
Thank you.

Yes, indeed there are. And while I've never bought Chapman as JtR. He is clearly a serial killer living in the area. And the points raised by yourself and Mei Trow about the Pinchin Street torso....?
Well lets say Mei Trow may have been wrong about JtR, but given his comments it would be ironic indeed if he did have the right Torso killer!
Fascinating Stuff. Que another doc.
Cheers for your input, trust you are well
Jeff
PS If Chapman were the Torso killer it would certainly make sense of Abberline's supposed comments
PS PS Your grabs are on there way Howard.
