Forum for discussing any and/or all actions taken and those not taken by Parliament or Whitehall which may have alleviated some/most of the fears on the street and turmoil created by the Whitechapel Murders.

We all hate or loathe politicians...so this should be a pretty united front. Whether you're a fire breathing right wing pro-Nativist like me or a banner waving lefty save the whales sort of guy like A.P Wolf....I'm sure you'll fit in somewhere on this discussion.

First up...

I'll be damned if I can find the mention in one of SPE or Mr. Begg's works on the incident....and I believe it was after the Double Event....where Warren resisted the encouragement of some politicians to conduct searches the type of which violated his perception of how the police should conduct themselves. It was in relation to door to door queries or something along those lines. Should anyone with a memory better than mine at the moment remember that incident...please post it for the rest of us.

Thanks.

Question for the reader:

Would the availability of a reward offered by the Crown have made any difference in your view....lets say after the September 8th murder of Annie Chapman ?

The member of Parliament for Whitechapel and Tower Hamlets, Samuel Montagu, was adamant that such a reward for the arrest and prosecution of the murderer would have helped -- but the Home Secretary Henry Matthews insisted on keeping to the line that such rewards had not helped in the past. Full discussion of the rewards question is upcoming in my article in the Dec. issue of Ripperologist.
