Ok the basics are done. It all requires joining together.
Here I am heading into unknown territory. I have never created anything this Big before.
The aim is to get the whole conference on two DVD's
I have just set up a time line for Saturday : Stuart Orme, Chris George, Mei Trow and Philip Hutchinson.
Running Time 3 hrs 28 minutes and 6 seconds
Its going to take an hour to render as you lose some information when you paste across. Then the second camera will require conforming to sequence.
Rendering out an HD file this size? well your guess is as good as mine but it could take a couple of days and if its over a terror bite I'll be in problems.
We may have to consider a lower rez format. But lets keep our fingers crossed. I'll be running tests today.
UPDATE: Jeff
PS If not the Best, we should hold the world record for the longest Jack the Ripper documentary in History!
Jeff Leahy
11-25-2009, 10:10 AM
Ok not as bad as I thought. I've clip it a bit more.
3 hours 24 minutes and 18 seconds. So about the size of Lord of the Rings.
The render seems to want 10 hours which is only an over night jobby. I have a freind in Finland who would laugh and Pooh pooh such sizes.
I'm off for a run but its all on schedual.
Jeff
PS We will try and have it on sale at the Whitechappel Xmas bash. However I still need to test it on USA DVd mechines which Howard has kindly agreed to do.

I would like to thank Paul Begg and Richard Jones for bringing the Sunday DVD in at:
3 hrs 11 minutes and 39 seconds
I think of course that altering a fellow Directors work is considered Sacrosanct in the Film industry...
However following death threats, and liable actions, and in fear of my future children, I have decided to make a few alterations to the Mega Movie section RIPPERLANDS...
Hopefully I will be able to sleep with myself..sorry John.:deadhorse:
RE: the unmentionable shots looking up commercial street? There are two of these in the fog section..I can cover these with fog..but this is a big Motion 3 effect that might take some time? Certainly not tonight. I will proceed by play out Saturday see you all in 10 hours Time.

I think I have established that it wont fit on a standard 4.7 GB disc
So we are looking into bigger discs. However for present you may all have to put up with some compression.
I'm fairly certain Adam is aim to keep cost to £15
So its going to have to fit on two discs somehow...?

I have had to lose the questions and some of colin's intro's outros:

Sat disc B: Trow/ Hutchinson
Sun Disc A: Begg / Jones/ Award Rob Clack
Sun Disc B: Tour / Ripperlands / Close
I'm still on the edge of compression possibility, I will do my best to have them on sale Saturday night, its going to the wire :boxing:

Hi Howard
Yes I should have made myself clear. We had the Art work and two sets of 25 discs ready.
Unfortunately my computer couldnt render the Quicktime and MPeg4. The process takes 18 hrs in all....so any error takes tim e to fix...
All the discs are now complete, with a couple of spelling errors and sound glitches fixed.
Once I have address from Adam I will post the remaining discs.
If you would like a copy please contact Adam.
I can get the discs in the post to you today Howard however I do not have the case's.
Yours Jeff
P.S. I have just posted copies to Howard. They are going to take 5 days. If anyone else wishes to write a review in the mean time feel free...
This is the ultimate Ripperologist's Xmas present 5 hrs of non stop Jack for only £15. Includes lectures by Jeremy Orme, Chris George, Mie Trow, Philip Hutchinson, Paul Begg, & Richard Jones.
An alternative tour : First ever tour inside Swallow Gardens, and St Georges Mortuary. Presentation to Rob Clack, and the first ever live performance of the documentary RIPPERLANDS.... thats big value, plus the money all goes into future JtR projects, to be announced soon...Jx

Jeff Leahy
12-17-2009, 08:38 AM
Hi Howard
And many thanks, We are all hoping Mum will now be home for Xmas.
I'm not certain how you can get a copy of Ripperland, its very underground and I think you have to belong to some secret sect to obtain a copy...it certainly would NOT be aloud for sale on any public format or shop. I gather that in Uganda they are making possession of a copy an executable offence.
That said the film is played in its entire length on the Conference DVD.
We have gotten around copyright problems by mixing between the live feed and a crack of the original. This means that the sound track is more ambient in places and the picture quality is not as good....(personally I think this is an improvement but don't tell the Director) We also had to make a few cuts to avoid international incidents. But by and large you should get a pretty good view of what this seminal production is all about :spit:
Hopefully they will arrive soon

The discs not only play well....but extraordinarily well ..... I have not watched them in their entirety, since I had to run back to work to get some things I left....but I moved the timeline back and forth on each disc and there was no differentiation in quality at all. None.

I'm on it right now. So far, so good. In fact. they're outstanding and they beat the heck out of a pack of voices without faces, like podcasts. Audio/visual is the way to go.
Here's a solution or at least a suggestion:
If Americans or those who rely on watching DVD's solely on DVD players in a zone other than the region Britain covers....the PAL format....you might want to inform American or Canadian consumers in advance...if it means countless hours of reformatting the discs. Trust me, it wasn't my DVD player.

I will be honored to review the speeches for quality of sound, how the discs perform ( visually ) in NTSC and in Windows XP and Windows Vista for the cool people on the boards. I can tell you now that the ones you sent before were terrific but not functional on American DVD players excluding computers which often have a "region-free" device built in. Well thats it. I now possess a copy in NTSC. It plays back on my comuputer although the quality is nowhere as good as the HD PAL DVD's.
Its time you Americans complained? about your TV quality.
Does that mean your Blu Ray is also poorer quality or do you get the same resolution from your TV sets in 1080i ??

Morning all, I've just noticed Adam now has the DVD forsale on the conference website. This went on casebook. I also did a reply about DVD formats. I just heading to the post office now Howard!
..and you can now order the 4-disc Conference DVD direct from the website!
Visit www.ripperconference.com/dvd and select your region!
Best wishes
Adam
Hi All
Actually the DVD masters were created in DVD pro Studio and are formatted to play in all regions except China. These masters are being duplicated by Adam for mass production so he may need to know your specific region for that reason.
Any disc you purchase should play on your computer DVD player.
The important piece of information however is the line resolution your TV/DVD player uses.
Different countries use different systems, which is all changing now we go over to HD and Blu Ray.
The old system used a dot that span around your TV screen in lines. Different countries used different numbers of lines. The Americans use a line system called NTSC and the British use a line configuration called PAL. The French have a different number of lines but cannot remember the name.
NTSC has fewer lines than PAL. So the picture quality is not as good. No doubt the French use more lines and have the best quality.
It is probable that if you are in the USA you will require NTSC. And if you are in Europe or UK you will need PAL.
If you are uncertain, I would imagine Australia and New Zealand use PAL, then please contact us in advance and we will find out and try to ensure you get the right discs.
I am putting the NTSC masters in the post to Howard this morning, there all boxed up, and he will check that they are working on American DVD players/TV’s.
Theoretically, American digital systems like Blu Ray should be the same in USA and UK, I’m not certain on this and if anyone has any knowledge it would be welcome.
I noticed when I was digging through my DVD pro menu’s that I can burn with Red or Blue lasers so it might be possible to create DVD’s that play on Blu Ray machines.
If anyone would prefer that format I’m happy to do some tests if you contact me. Obviously this is going to be required by everyone eventually, until the next system.
If you purchase Disc’s we will do everything possible to ensure they work on your DVD, and I’m sure Adam will be happy to refund anyone that is not satisfied. All feedback so far has been very positive.
Yours Jeff
Hi Jeff / Adam
I don't know if it's my screen resolution or what, but when I access that web page, you cannot scroll down to the "buy it now" button

The NTSC copies went out to Howard yesterday.
Once he has tested them and given a thumbs up or down, I will burn out several sets and send them to Adam for packaging.
So you will have to bear with us time wise.
I'm a little worried that a number of people are having difficulties ordering copies I will give Adam a buzz now and see if he can help.
I'm rather pleased there is going to be another conference this year. I much enjoyed meeting you all as well. Even my daughter, who came along to shop and hitch a lift, said she enjoyed talking to you guys. Now that truely was a complement.
My conference tip for 2010. Is check out Tesco's? If you shop there and get vouchers you can exchange them at a rate of four for one with hotel vouchers. So only £50 or £60 of Tesco's vouchers should get you a room for the weekend. HOT TIP.

Hi all
There appears to have been a glitch on the NTSC copies of the conference.
I dont think its the masters which appear correct.
It may have been something to do with how they were imported and conected to the menu.
I am currently resolving this and will send new copies to Howard for testing tomorrow. My apologies if anyone has paid and is waiting for their USA discs.
This does require sorting properly, once we have it you can assure that future productions will be quicker in arriving. :peace:

I've recently finished watching the full set of DVDs
I thoroughly enjoyed watching all of the footage and was very impressed with the picture quality and standard of editing, and the overall presentation of the discs themselves
Colin Cobb does is an excellent MC and definitely the right man for the job
(I didn't realise he was a Titanic tour guide at the Belfast shipyard)
All the lectures were all well worth watching - I personally especially liked Chris George's delivery - some very interesting facts emerged within his presentation, MJ Trow on the torso's and Paul Begg on Leather Apron , though that is not to imply the other talks are less worthy of praise
Anybody interested in Phillip Hutchinson's recent find of the Dutfield Yard photograph will definitely want to see his outstanding presentation regarding this and the Whitby collection
The film of Phil's Ripper tour was very entertaining and informative and a real treat
Everybody with even a smattering of knowledge regarding Ripperologist personalities will enjoy the Ripperland film. I loved the SPE bit describing Kelly's injuries when the censors kicked in
Overall, extremely enjoyable and entertaining - thoroughly recommended
Thanks for all the hard work Adam Wood and especially Jeff Leahy for producing this work
I hope the work continues in the future and all Ripper conferences are documented in this way :thumb:

I'm pleased you enjoyed the Disc's, makes it very worth while. The team around the project have all worked brilliantly together and future productions are certainly planned. We will be filming 2010. Thanks Adam, Andy and John.
I've just noticed that the NTSC have imported and I will try and get them burned now.
I must admit that I was rather pleased generally with the quality and the great lectures. So thanks to Paul, Richard, Chris, stuart, Mei, and especially Philip who not only did a fine lecture but made the tour such fun to edit. They were the real stars.
Yours Jeff :couch2:

Thank you, Nemo, for your kind remarks about my presentation at the conference. Did you think I sounded like a Yank? As I wrote on another site, though I am from Liverpool, England, I've lived in the USA most of my life, and though the Americans think I am English, the English think I am a Yank.

Hi Chris
I didn't detect any twang - I'll watch it again with that in mind
I didn't detect any scouse either - lol
The Yanks would think you were English
I liked your deliberation and I could imagine you reading your poetry
You reminded me to look into the links with ex-policemen / George Morris the nightwatchmen etc
Good job!

Yo Yo Yo Systems Go!!!!!!!
Thanks so much Howard. I have just received an email from Adam, so I know that there are orders pending..
Obviously I did not want to release DVDs to The USA until I new they were working correctly..the original problem must have been the menu page, as I suspected..
Please let everyone know what you think of the content. I will phone Adam first thing and get the ball rolling...
Many Many thanks for your help Howard :kev: YOU ROCK :third::drum:

Blimey the conference DVD has just received the ultimate accolade.
Apparently I have made Paul Begg look good!
Of course there were fairly hefty lens, make-up and soft focus requirements written into the contract. Plus I had to drive him to and from the venue and listen to his rantings while apparently asleep..I still haven’t worked out what the conversation was about..?
But its good to know Howard can play the DVD’s in the USA.
I will again try and contact Adam and find out what is happening to your orders. The Disc’s however are complete and will be with you all soon.
Yours Jeff

Yeah...but thats only in NTSC & PAL. He's yet to be seen in all regions.
The video gives the viewer a sense of being there at the Convention. I should know. 10 minutes into Mr. Begg's speech a voice in my room told me to take a hike. I think it was Sir Bob's.

Just to keep everyone updated:

The NTSC copies have been posted to Adam and are now available.
I have sent a white label set to Tom Wescott who has agreed to do a review.
So they should now be available in The UK and USA.
Happy viewing :thumb:

VERY IMPoRTANT!!!!!
It has been discovered that the NTSC copies of the conference DVD do not for some reason play the last 10 minutes?
I have no idea why at present but I am remastering them now.
If you have received copies that dont play the whole way through, either contact Adam or myself. I will get them out as soon as I can figure what is going wrong.

The time problem could be that ntsc is 30 fps were pal is 25 fps and if you are tight on dvd space it may not fit.

Jeff:
I am very sorry ( Having just seen the last post you made ) about the disc problem. I admit to not having watched the entire NTSC on a DVD player since I had already watched the entire program on computer twice.
I did however watch at least 10 minutes of each disc on a DVD player. Needless to say, they came out superbly as mentioned.
I apologize to all ( if any) who bought this series based on my recommendation and hope that the problem will be remedied.

Hi Howard
Thats OK. It is a simple mistake. And to be honest it has me totally baffled.
I can get around the problem by adding slugs (Blank video sections) at the end.
Its whether or not I can then fit them on a 4.7GB disc.
Hopefully Tom noticed it before any went out. However if anyone does have these discs contact me.
I'm running tests but each one takes about two and half hour to cook.
I will get there eventually
Jeff
Hi Jeff,
Have you considered using dual-layer discs to record on? You can fit almost twice as much data on them compared to a conventional 4.7gb disc. They are more expensive, so I can understand not using them if price point is an issue.
Thanks for all the continued hard work. We all appreciate it.

Hi Robert
Yes I did look at dual layer discs. But its not actually the 4.7GB size that is causing the problem.
This is what I think is happening. The original Project is set up in PAL. When you master out in NTSC there is about 15% less pixel information so although the FCP can convert to NTSC it thinks its reach the end before it has done so.
So the next thing to do is create a new project in NTSC working from scatch.
Take in the Animation Masters and convert them into the time line. Then you playout masters in NTSC. Which should now be the correct length. And master then to DVD in DVD pro studio in NTSC.
In theory it should work but its going to take several days to achieve as this is a long rendering job.
Adam has not sent out the discs or created masters. We cault him just in time to stop the run.
So please bare with us, we will get you guys the whole conference eventually.
Yours Jeff

Dear all
I've had some enquiries about the NTSC copies of the conference DVD.
Just to assure you all that I am still working on it.
Its complictated, but I have another 3 hr render going throw at present. two more to go so hopefully I will be able to start a new NTSC project tomorrow.
I will keep you all posted but please give me a little more time.
Yours Jeff
Thanks for the update, Jeff.
I have heard excellent reviews from those that have seen it on PAL. I'm glad there are no outtakes on this set of DVDs. Then people would really find out what went on at Ripper conferences.

I've done IT! I now have NTSC copies that play full length with no blank media!
I'm playout 3 copies. One will go to Adam for copying
one to St Howard
And the other to Tom Wescott who kindly pointed out the problem.
Its only taken two weeks! but they seem to play OK on my computer now the test will be on your DVD players.
I do apologize about this guys and thanks for those who have been so patient.
Yours Jeff

I've noticed that a Mr sbfightfan is trying to contact me on casebook about DVD NTSC's.
Unfortunately I am currently unavailable on casebook due to reasons beyond my control.
If you would like information then contact:
