Thanks, Mike, the first section about the suspect being shadowed day and night, while he knew he was being watched is interesting, and obviously doesn't relate to the latter part of the story about Farquaharson's theory.

My thoughts too. It seems that the story is split into 3 quite different parts, with the Farquharson theory, as part 2, right in the middle, and having nothing to do with the upper or lower sections of the report.

Agreed, Mike and Debs. Confusingly written but three different ideas, with the Farquharson theory stuck in the middle. The main thrust of the story is that, much as with Anderson's claim, the police knew who the murderer was but could not close the case. This implies that as with the anecdote related at the end of the article about the man who was trying to bilk the MP's, the murderer survived and got away with his crimes.

To Chris G

Yes, that is the received wisdom and it might be correct.

On the other hand, Mac's memoirs do not claim Druitt was a doctor, whilst 'said to be a doctor' leaves you with an 'out' if he is not a doctor.

Even if Mac's memory began to fade by 1894 that does not mean that, back in 1891, he did not make a thorough, albeit private, investigation, within the limits of the laws of libel and propriety.

The frantic chums in Sims' writings shows that Mac did once see, or have access to, the inquest report, for that is really a veiled version of William Druitt trying to find the missing Montie.

To know that is to at least have once known, that Druitt was 31, a barrister, and that he killed himself three weeks after Kelly.

The younger, thinner Sims does bear a resemblance to the school photos of Druitt, suggesting that Macnaghtgen had once seen a picture of Jack.

Everything we read about Macnaghten is about how he would hurl himself into the centre of major cases.

Is it really credible that this police chief, of all police chiefs, would leave it a few gossipy scraps?

Do nothing more, speak to nobody, hide n his office?

That he would not immediately meet with fellow Etonian, Henry Farqharson, and then William Druitt?

His memoir does not say he met with anybody, but it does metnion 'certain facts' leading to a 'conlusion' and 'his own people'.

Furthermore it is serene and under no strain to reveal all to us, or much of anything except the spartan basics: this was the Ripper and I laid his spectre to rest.

For example, it does not even mention the Thames drowning.

Hi Jonathan,

If Mac's purpose was to reveal to us that 'this was the Ripper and I laid his spectre to rest' it seems that only you got the message.

When naming 'the Ripper' he claimed to have no shadow of proof against him or the two also-rans he named.

Not very bright, was it, if he assumed we would all be bright enough to see through his little deception? ;)

Love,

Caz

Hello all,

Ahh, he says with a solid wink in his eye... did MM know about the begging letter man and knew this was Kosminski, who "left London", an acronism for being banged up in an asylum, thereby MM laid the trail there to a cold rest, allowing Druitt, via Farquaharson's tale, to be manipulated to it's fullest extent?
The first part being the introduction of the away for a while Kosminski, all written in decieving tones of course, to fool us all into thinking that the reverse was in fact true, thereby casting the light away from MM's pet theory? :der::becky:

We will probably never know...

best wishes
