No probs, Howster, glad to have participated!

And now to wait for the moment of truth....though since Joe Chetcuti is the other article-writer, I won't be holding my breath!..

The winner of the November 9th Competition was...

...Joe Chetcuti.

Our mystery judge was the author of "The First JTR Photographs", Mr. Robert McLaughlin.

From Robert:
-------------------------------------------

Thank you to Howard Brown for bringing me in as the guest judge for this contest. I was disappointed by the number of entries (you had time to write some SSB-fueled article A. P.) but enjoyed the two that were submitted. After careful deliberation, the winner of the generous prize goes to Joe Chetcuti.

Joe Chetcuti obviously has plenty of research material left over from his recent Tumblety articles published in Ripperologist. Personal stories always make for interesting reading, even when they are only on the fringes of the Ripper case. It made me want to know more about the life and career of Detective Chambers. His links to Tumblety just add to what we know of this Ripper suspect and teases us with what more there is to find. I do not believe that Tumblety was Jack the Ripper but I do believe he is the most fascinating and complicated of all the suspects. Tumblety would make for a compelling movie - much more so than the tired plots of the royals and freemasons. In the interim, Joe, keep digging into the links between Chambers and Tumblety.

Adam Went must also be praised for his article about the Old Melbourne Gaol, Frederick Deeming and Ned Kelly. The pictures are wonderful but more time needs to be spent on the history of the gaol, while telling the stories of both Deeming and Kelly. If more time were spent fleshing out the details and making the piece cohesive, it would definitely see its way to print. Yes, many of us know about Deeming and Ned Kelly but the Old Melbourne Gaol is an original angle. Put me back inside that prison as you were. Let me know what life inside there was like for Kelly, Deeming and the other prisoners incarcerated throughout its history.

Joe: Get in touch with me to tell me which magazine you wish to either renew for one year or get for the first time. Congrats !

And congrats to Adam as well.

Congratulations to Joe and commiserations to Adam. I'm sure we'll be seeing a revamped version of his article in print.

I was going to do one on late Victorian plastic knees, but it would have stood no chance.

WHAT!? I didn't win!!?? Oh that's just not acceptable....nowhere near good enough....I mean, how is that possible? ... :( .... .

Just kidding, of course. I was expecting that, once I knew Joe was the guy I was going up against. Sincere congratulations on what I'm sure was a wonderful piece, Joe, and hopefully we'll see it in print some time soon. Another addition to a fantastic series of articles we've already seen in Ripper mags about Tumblety.

Thanks to Bob McLaughlin for not only judging, but also for the additional comments on my article. To be honest, it's true that I cut corners in my article - I actually ended up having to do about two-thirds of that article in one day. So, a fair judgement for sure!! I'm glad it was enjoyed, though, that's the main thing.

And Robert, yes, I'll re-vamp the article and see what the mag editors reckon once that's done. I'd still like to see something done with it, though - if not the article, the photos help tell the story quite well too!

Till the next competition....
Cheers,
Adam. :)

"My Mudda danks you. My Fadda danks you. My little sister danks you. And I dank you."

Everybody who does a James Cagney impersonation always breaks into the old "You dirty rat" routine. But I prefer reciting that above Cagney quote from Yankee Doodle Dandy. It's much more friendlier and applicable. Now if everyone at the Academy Awards would just walk up to the podium and say that quick little speech when receiving their Oscars, that show can be all wrapped up within a hour.

Australia will now probably declare war on Malta because of this contest.

I'd like to thank Robert M. for taking the time to read my article.

How, I didn't contribute a thing to Joe's article.

Nor am I going to help him rake his mum's garden. :)

Robert;

You're so instrumental in a lot of different research areas, that I knee-jerked and thought you were involved. My mistake.

Now I guess I'll have to rake the leaves at Joe's... :(

Just to clarify.....Joe did all the work on his article and asked for opinions after the fact.

Sorry to have given a incorrect impression. Thats why they call me The Dope.
