I recently read the Ripper Legacy by Howells & Skinner and I liked it. The authors make exclamation of Anne Druitt, his mother, being admitted to Brooke House private asylum and its proximity to the East End. The book includes a of photo of it in Clapton, and also her record of admission there on July 5, 1888 and discharge January 5, 1889.

Brooke House was an ancient house which survived until World War II when it was bombed. Then an archeological report was done, the Survey of London, vol 28 which is contained in British History online.

There is an interesting coincidence. The Monro family owned Brooke House for some time and Dr. Henry Monro was the owner when Anne Druitt was there, although a Dr. Adams was in charge. (studymore) This Monro family lineage is from Scotland. And of course we know Met Police Commissioner James Monro was from Edinburgh. I suppose it's just a coincidence, as I can't recall it being discussed in Ripperology. Unless someone knows otherwise.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't "Secret Lives" merely a slightly expanded editino of "Portrait"?

Like I said, I could just be remembering the pre-publication hype incorrectly.
