Tim or Howard,
Site was down for a bit earlier and now the site banners been replaced with a vbulletin logo. Any idea what's going on?
admin tim
12-27-2009, 09:24 PM
Yes.
Our server host was upgrading the software with the latest version, which, as it turned out, was flawed. This is what was causing the problems.
I suppose the jtrforums logo was another casualty, but it should be easily fixed.
We have since reverted back to the previous version and all should now be well.
Hi Tim
I thought you'd like to know that the links such as "new posts" or "search" has disappeared from above the forums - and the smilies

Folks:
Try changing "skins"...at the very bottom of the page and go to the original default skin. I see 'search' and 'new posts' when I use the original skin.
Hopefully, our people can sort this out soon.

For the time being...I'd suggest going to the right hand side of the front page and clicking on the last post OR...going to the left hand side and opening up the entire Forum ( Such as "suspects and theories" ) and look at the date of the most recent post and if interested, read that one.
This is annoying, I know, and I apologize for the problems people may be having. However, we didn't experience any loss of material...which is a good thing.

Actually the "New Posts" and "Search" buttons are still missing for me.
If you want to bring up new posts, in the absence of the button, click on the following link:
http://jtrforums.com/search.php?do=getnew
It will activate the "New Posts" functionality, provided you're logged in - you can also make a bookmark (or "Favorite") of it. (Incidentally, this is the way I always access New Posts on various forums, and I have a few such bookmarks in my bookmark bar. I don't use "New Posts" buttons at all :))

It logs me out but then the original page is still underneath so Im still logged in!I think you'll find that you're logged out, albeit the logout message appears on a new tab, Bell. The "underneath" is presumably the old tab from which you clicked the link.I prefer to log out everytime...I reserve that "belt-and-braces" approach to internet banking or webmail pages - for friendly sites, like JTRForums (and what could be friendlier? :)) I'm more than happy to take the "keep me logged in" option.

I love the new map logo at the top but please can we have the rest back! I still cant log out, and the list at the top of the page has gone, the bit with new posts, search etc, I cant do any of that!
The "New Posts" thing works with the link I posted earlier, Bell - in fact, when you click the "New Posts" button (assuming we had one), all it does is invoke the following in the background:
http://jtrforums.com/search.php?do=getnew
Clicking that link is no different from clicking a "New Posts" button. Honest! That's how it works.
As to searching, try typing (or copying/pasting) the following as a temporary measure into Google:
site:www.jtrforums.com SEARCHWORD/PHRASE inurl:jtrforums.com
Substitute SEARCHWORD/PHRASE with the word or phrase you wish to search against (e.g. "leather apron") like this:
http://www.btinternet.com/~gareth.h.williams/images/searchphrase.jpg
After clicking the search button, Google does the rest:
http://www.btinternet.com/~gareth.h.williams/images/results.jpg
Not ideal, but pretty good as an interim measure!

Don't ask just anyone...ask the administrator. Thats his end of the deal. He's a bum and I've been firm on this for 5 years. Its why he rakes in a hefty $2.70 per hr. and not one cent more.
Yesterday I asked him to resubjugate the avatars in light of the prognathus efforts of Nemo ( Mr. Nice Guy )...and it looks like you two took a trimming.
Let me see if I can fix it....although you need to know that I once rewired a '66 Buick once...and due to a kupla mistakes here and there made it possible to start the engine by merely opening the passenger side door.
Wish me luck.

Those whose avatars are not working must now supply one of their own since the picklist is also defunct. This is why some have visible avatars and some don't. Those who do not have an avatar selected from the picklist that we have in place, and which was another casualty of the upgrade. Even the avatars forum is mostly out of commission, so these features will likely be long in restoration.
Thans for the sentiment Howard - I'm not that nice really - lol

If you didn't see my notice post on the subject, here it is again:
There are two 'skins' to choose from on the site, these being default and silver blue. The problem everyone is having is that the silver blue skin has become corrupted due to the recent software upgrade and crash, and it is not showing or permitting all functions. The default skin is apparently OK.
If you had selected the silver blue skin, it must be changed to the default skin to be fully functional, and I will have to do the changing. Please notify me of such as directed per the Announcement and other posts, and I will convert you.
If you had the default skin, DO NOT convert to silver blue.
The silver blue skin will be abandoned.

Not quite the same impact as Glen or Glenda?, but it'll have to do.
I find that both 'Simon' and 'Simon Wood' are registered. Do you recall having an alter ego here? Some members, such as ferret and Suzi do.
So you must have just logged in as 'Simon'. Log out and then log in as 'Simon Wood' and see if it works. If not, then I will reset the password to 'Simon Wood' and we'll make it work. I suspect that both passwords must be the same or you could not have gotten on as 'Simon'.

I don't visit the Casebook.org forums much anymore, maybe 3 or 4 times a year, but this morning, on visiting, I got an alert from my anti-virus software stating that just viewing the forums could be damaging to the computer, as it contained some sort of "mailware" program...whatever that is. Has Stephen Ryder commented on this, or has anyone notice any problems? I'm not a computer geek (by design) so these things are somewhat of a mystery to me. Anyway, the alert was enough to keep me away. Ciao.
P.S. This month's edition of Fortean Times mentions McCrone & Associates...which some will recall from the Maybrick Diary debate. Evidently they can now determine if the ink on a questioned document was first applied when the paper was new, or if it was applied many years later. In other words, whether the forger merely found an appropriately old sheet of paper (or notebook) or whether the document dates to shortly after the paper (or notebook) was first made...

Hmmmm, so for publicity for the company they'd probably test the Diary for free.

Nice idea chaps.
Sadly, we don't know when the guard book itself was 'new'. Expert opinion on the paper dated it back as early as 1870 or as late as circa 1900. So a date of 1870 would mean that the paper was already nearly twenty years old at the very least before any 'diary' ink could have touched it. If that fits the definition of 'many years later', we'd be back to the drawing board.

As you say, prima facie it would not assist in the dating, but it might be worth getting further information from McCrone to see precisely what this new technique is, just in case it could be of any practical assistance in dating the diary.

Yep, I'm all for that if anyone fancies giving them another go.
I just hope nobody there remembers how badly the waters got muddied last time round... (not by anyone present I hasten to add )

The malware on Casebook may have been a "cookie" that remembers your visit, password etc
Legitimate cookies - especially "tracking cookies" are sometimes misidentified as malware

I would have that microscopic study of any foxing type contamination of the paper would indicate something similar
ie ink over foxing - ink under foxing may give some indication of age to the writing
Wouldn't Maybrick (or otherwise) have left some sweat on the paper while writing, available for DNA testing?
I think studying and identifying when and where, in the flow of the text, the pen was dipped in the ink would be very telling, as it appears to me to indicate multiple entries in one sitting and the like which I would take as evidence of forgery

Hi Nemo,
The irregular fading of the ink over time (as observed throughout the diary by Alec Voller in 1995) might make it rather tricky for the layman to identify, from the facsimile in Shirley's books, the exact points where the pen was dipped in ink.
I think it's also safe to say that the writing today - irregular fading and all - is identical in appearance to how it looks in the facsimile from 1993. In short, it doesn't seem to have aged a jot since it was first brought to London - despite the odd claim to the contrary over the years, made and then repeated by people who haven't examined the thing up close even once, let alone more than once and at different times.
But maybe we should be taking this to a more appropriate thread! :censored:

When I am not logged in the threads are arrainged like you would normally expect them. When logged in it's backwards with the most recent posts at the top of page 1 of the thread, not the last post on the last page. So I scroll from bottom to top to read rather than the usual top to bottom. Is there a simple fix to this? Weird.

I can't find the post where I said that my internet connection is lost every couple of minutes when logged into and viewing JtRForums
Though true, I seem to have located the problem, and it's not really to do with this site
It is Virgin Media's DNS servers which direct the connection / query to the correct IP address. The servers have known issues and my experience confirms it
Now that I've changed my DNS server to one that works I do not lose connection at all
I'm shortly going to give Virgin some stick as I've been trying to sort this problem for months and got very little help from Virgin who kept blaming it on my modem
Anyway, as an aside, in researching my problem I came across what is known as a "Kaminsky attack" in which a whole DNS zone is taken over by a bad guy - named after it's discoverer...
