Dear Members,
The caricature which admin has displayed with his posts is Jack the Ripper from the Victorian cartoon which appeared in the newspapers at the time of Mrs. Florence Maybrick's trial. The person in the centre is Home Secretary Henry Matthews and on the right is Justice holding a pardon for Mrs. Maybrick while Jack the Ripper is holding a death warrant for her.
This is interesting and telling that the Victorian press connected Jack the Ripper with Mrs. Maybrick.

Cheers!

Regards,

Anne

Attached is the illustration and the caption. JtR is holding a document which states, "Hang". Lady Justice is holding a pardon which states, "Free" and under states, "Pardon".
Enjoy! If you have any questions or I can be of further assistance, just ask. Cheers!

Regards,

Anne

Hello, Anne:

Well, this does look vaguely familiar; I must have seen it at one time or another in my reading of diary documents, but I must have either not noticed or had forgotten that the image of JTR in the upper left is the same image that I have seen in many other locations, in its current truncated form to the left here.

I will have to look into this more to try to recall where I first saw it. There is certainly no disputing its origin here (although I think they really meant Stewart Evans) and it is kind of shocking now to rediscover the entire image. Thanks for the memory jog and history lesson; I'm sure others will appreciate it as well.

Hello Members,
Here is the newly scanned copy. The image would not scan any larger. The death warrant in JtR's hand says,"HANG THE WANTON. MURDER HER." The Pardon in Lady Justice's hand says, "FREE PARDON".

Anne

Hello,
I just looked at the illustration with the Sir Henry Matthews below. I noticed on Lady Justice's skirt, there is the word, "LIFE" and on her sleeve there are initials, " LM". I'm unsure about the first but the second is definitely a "M".
Also, at the far left bottom corner on the table cloth there appears to be some markings. Possibly, either here or on Justice's sleeve the initials of the illustrator.
Immediately above this to the left of the books on the table in front of Jack is the word, "DEATH".

Regards,

Anne

Anne: I just remembered reading your post, containing the reference to the "game" that was being created that glorifies the Ripper...Why be surprised? ....On many occasions, and I will tell tales out of school, Ivor has bitterly discussed via phone or e-mail, the "cottage industry" of Jack the Ripper and serial killers in general. The SOLE purpose of studying these monsters ,regardless of circumstances which 'created " them ,is to ELIMINATE them. Let me give two examples of the treatment given and afforded to these untermenschen........Here in Philadelphia, a city that does not take even the most minor maltreatment to children for granted, period, a ritualistic killing took place back on February 29th. I tried countless times, and I mean, countless times,to find out what was behind the removal of a man's liver, heart, and lung, and physical disposal in an alley that would rival Whitechapel's squalor any day of the week . I might as well have asked how many fish there are in the North Sea. I probably would have recieved a better resp
onse.........and certainly a faster one. Nothing has been mentioned,PERIOD,other than a well-written article in a periodical in a free, college oriented, tabloid in the 5th biggest city in the USA. Its nothing short of a disgrace to the remainder of the man's family that nothing has been pursued, regarding this crime..... The second one is the increasing escalation of movies that glorify serial killers, like HANNIBAL....I am not too squeamish personally and neither am I really that passive...However,the MBE that Anthony Hopkins recieved should be taken back. Children are really getting their wiring crossed with buses decorated with the evil countenance of Hopkins and the like, glorifying serial killers..........A final swipe: A good friend of mine gave me the book about Gerald Schaefer,a happily dead ex-cop from Florida, who murdered probably 30 girls in the most horrifying ways. I cannot read past the third chapter. His ex-girlfriend, in a desire to gain immortality and a few bucks, took down his memoranda and account on how he murdered these women. She actually allowed herself to be photographed hugging and playfully mugging for the cameraman within the pages of the book. Colin Wilson, the Ripperologist, spent time writing a forward for the book and discussed how many times he masturbated in his life whenever confronted with an attractive girl. He also went on a spiel on "why" he felt he should write a forward for the book. This latter scenario is why I personally like and revere Ivor( and anyone with a like mind ). It sickens him too. I would actually like( as I do) and respect Ivor anyway........ This "Ripperstudies" thing has gone too far........Look at a certain other site. They actually devoted poems to this creature. They have created board games. They jealously keep information on the 41 pages of Maybrick/Barrett's newly found diary from intelligent, inquisitive "brethren" on the same site..that is,unless, they BUY their book.... There is nothing wrong if Tim or Ivor or Anne decide to write a book about the Ripper, very obviously......To perpetuate the Ripper or the members of Palo Mayombe as methods of procuring the Great God Dollar may be a crime equal to the subhuman behavior of Jack The Ripper. I see none of that here at this site and detect nothing of the sort from Ivor's strenuous legwork or Tim's outstanding poll questions. Its an exercise for inquiring minds........I am happy that another voice such as yours,Anne, has been heard from ,regarding the seemingly neverending debasement of OUR women, daughters, and children for a dollar, pound or shekel.......Your friend,How
