View Full Version : Five Daughters
Is anyone watching this TV dramatisation of the life of the victims of the Suffolk strangler?
There are some interesting aspects of the mind-set of a drug addicted prostitute raised within the programme

Yes, Nemo, I have been watching this three-parter and I think the subject is being handled very sensitively, without losing any of the hard and immeasurably sad 'addicted prostitute' facts of life.
Nothing is flowered up, and we get a real sense of the personalities of three of the victims, whose mothers and other close family members agreed to be involved with the programme.
The killer himself is reduced to a shadowy secondary predator - a vehicle for speeding up, in this handful of cases, the process of destruction already begun by the drugs. As addicts, the victims were readily available to anyone with a more immediately destructive habit to feed.
Last part tonight.

Good comments there Caroline
I particularly like the last line
I'd recommend the programme - try to get it "on demand" if you missed it
It's very easy to transfer the women mentally to 1888 with an addiction to alcohol
You get some little understanding of why they would solicit even in the knowledge that a serial killer was operating in the immediate area - among many other aspects

This was filmed at the end of my road in January, all the park scenes and the cafe are just around the corner from my home. I'm glad now I didn't ring the BBC and make a fuss (as for 4 nights I had 3 high intensity lights on towers glaring through my windows and had no sleep - also my mother in law died in the middle of the filming so facing that when I was so stressed out by lack of sleep was difficult) as it has to be one of the high points of drama in recent years (so worth a bit of stress).
I love the way the victims were humanised in this adaptation, it didn't dress up what they did in ribbons but it showed their vulnerability and the human cost of addiction. They were shown respect.

I was very impressed by the gentle and balanced treatment towards the victims and their mother"s in particular. It felt so different watching this from seeing the frenzy of the press coverage at the time.It was a brilliant and worthy account.

Raven,Nats,Neems,
If this program comes out on a disc, could you please let me know so I can get Jon Rees to buy it for me ?
This sounded like something I would definitely have watched if I (was allowed in the U.K. and of course) had television.

Just did a few on line searches and couldn't find anything, but I will keep a look out How as I will buy it myself as soon as it is released. It was by far the best drama of its ilk in recent years.
