Inspired by Cris Malone..an idea I had wanted to mention a few years ago,but was a little timid and therefore didn't.

Lets suppose, my fellow Forumites, that one man had been arrested, tried, and convicted of one murder (Lets use the Mary Kelly murder for the time being) in late 1888...but was assumed to be the murderer of Tabram through the Double Event at the time of his arrest, during his trial, at his sentencing, as he awaited execution, and after his execution in early 1889.

His legal team tried their best to get him off the hook by pleading insanity, but to no avail.

Lets call him Joe Bloggs, a seaman of English ancestry.

Over the next century up until the establishment of the Internet and Message Board Ripperology....research was undertaken by various authors and researchers, limited to communicating only by means of phone, letter, or rendezvous, to not only connect Mr. Bloggs to all of the 1888 murders but also to remove the contemporaneously established stain of Bloggs being the murderer of all the women who were murdered by knife in 1888...those who are considered canonical victims including Tabram.

Would you, as a Ripperologist, be one of those who would try to link Joe Bloggs to all those murders that the consensus felt, but could not prove, he was guilty of ?

Or would you attempt to clear him of any other charge other than the one he was sentenced and executed for ?

You shouldn't do either; you should carefully assess the available evidence and see to what conclusion it leads.

Absolutely Paul, however some just need to have an answer.

Thanks for the replies so far John & Paul.
You too, George Ringo Bell.:thumb:

Neil:
I understand your response being to suggest that some Ripperologists seem to have a "need" to either link all the murders in 1888 to one man or in contrast, deconstruct the serial killer skein-theory to the point where multiple killers are responsible for the WM....if I am wrong Neil, please counter.

If no other men were ever arrested , much less convicted, for any other murder in the skein of 1888 except our Bloggs fellow....would you ( and all three of you happen to be diligent respected researchers ) find yourself as interested in the WM as you are today ?

Do any of you three feel the Case would hold as much interest as it does today for other individuals aside from yourselves considering the one theorized conviction for one of the murders ?

Would you also at any point find yourself trying to counter the conviction of our theroretical killer in some way ?

I think interest would be "there" among our people to either theorize against the conviction ( by suggesting that someone else committed the crime of murdering Kelly and/or that it was a conspiracy involving the police or poor legal counsel )....as much as trying to link him to all the murders...and also for other reasons which one of you three gents may have in mind.

Again,thank you for the replies.
