I don't remember seeing the snippet below. Is this "young man" who was chairman of the Whitechapel Vigilance Committee our own Albert Backert?
The article is from the Nottingham Evening Post of 13 Jan 1890. |

Chris:
I'm sure it is....I've pretty sure I've seen that report in a few other papers from 1890.

It is Chris, and I think he was right and the paper did accuse him of fabricating evidence.

Debs, all
For the life of me I can't remember what Bachert's complaint was ( what he was alleged to have fabricated )....do you remember ?

How, I can't remember exactly but when I was trawling through the numerous threads that mention Backert on the forums recently I'm sure Dave James posted some stuff on this. Unless my memory is playing tricks and we never did find out exactly what he'd been accused of. That's a mission if not, eh? |

Sure is Debs...I spent some time yesterday looking through an American source which has NYHerald articles...but haven't located the "libelous" one which Albert Bachert was referring to.

Hi How
The article is dated the 13 Jan 1890 which was a Monday. It refers to the NY Herald articles as in "Saturday's and Sunday's issues." This could be the two preceding days - 11 and 12 Jan 1890 - but to allow time for Albert to have seen and read the articles - considering this was a US paper - and consider legal action they may well have been the issues from the previous weekend - 4 and 5 Jan - or even earlier Chris |

Chris:
Thanks very much ! I had focused on articles from late 1889, thinking there would be a month or two between the publication of the article and A.B.'s reaction.

Hi Chris, How, Debs, I came across this article in the Hull Daily Mail recently, dated January 13th 1890 and decided to look at the New York Herald Archives, held here, http://fultonhistory.com/my%20photo%...ald/index.html but am struggling to find anything.
