Very nice, Gumshoe; thanks.
I've sold some of that kind of thing... had a lovely porcelain 19th C. Apothecary jar inscribed something like "Dolorosa" in Latin ( I forget exact spelling) It originally held Cocaine or something to chase away the blues! |

Hi, How.
Dolor means 'Sorrow', 'Grief', 'Misery' and 'Anguish' in Latin, which is the language the inscription was in. As in 'Via Dolorosa', the Way of Sorrow. If it means "pain" in Spanish, I think it must be because it is derived from the fact that sorrow & grief are painful experiences. Various forms of "Dolor" are used in Psychology to describe "Sorrowful Depression" & "Sadness" as well.
