Joseph Barnett Something about his candidacy smells awfully fishy.

The witnesses names can often be useful. Can't wait to see who Poll's were.

It also supports the idea that Catherine Barnett was still close to her children and hadn't 'abandoned' them as some have suggested in the past.

I thought a lot about this. Catherine Barnett never seemed to have a profession listed. Perhaps she never worked out of the home for whatever reason. By living with Allman or being his housekeeper, she supported herself. Maybe there wasn't room for her kids to live with Allman or he did not want them in his home. It looks like Catherine's children worked hard to support each other financially and otherwise throughout life. Catherine living with Allman would make one less mouth to feed in the household supported by Daniel Barnett's fish porter earnings.

Good point.

I also read (Paley?) that life was so hard for Daniel as he struggled to support his three siblings that the family ended up in one of the worst areas of London, a small, overcrowded street a mile or so north of where Joseph had been born that would soon be condemned as being unfit for human habitation.

Mmm...

So worse than the conditions in the Blue Anchor Yard courts, then? Really?

Gary, are you going to post Barnetto on Casebook? They've been waiting breathlessly.

It strikes me that the use of the K in both the bride's and the female witness's name was probably down to the registrar. The two women were illiterate, it would seem, so they wouldn't have known the difference.

Mary Ann Bier born 16 Feb 1878 and baptised 3 March 1878. Father Joseph Bier. mother Catherine nee Barnett. Godfather Thomas Allman, Godmother Margaret Allman.

Margaret Beer born 28 May 1879 and baptised 11 June 1879. Father Joseph Beer, mother Catherine nee Barnett. Godmother Ellen Sullivan.

Maria Louisa Beer born 2 April 1882 and baptised 19 April 1882. Father Jospeh Beer, mother Catherina [Catherine] nee Barnett. Godfather Joseph Williams, Godmother Louisa Williams.
