Thanks for posting this, How.
Considering his prolific use of the bully pulpit during some of his inquests to point out many of the social concerns mentioned here, it's surprising that Baxter didn't submit to many extensive press interviews at the time.

Hi Cris

The key to the situation is just what you said, that he could use the inquest itself as a bully pulpit, as a number of coroners did to highlight certain issues. Samuel Brighouse, coroner for Southwest Lancashire, who oversaw the inquests on James Maybrick and on the Rainhill murders of Deeming's family, similarly used certain inquests to make public issues he thought citizens needed to know. See my article on Brighouse at http://www.casebook.org/dissertation...brighouse.html. That being so, the officials didn't need to seek out separate forums to make themselves heard. The Pall Mall interview with Wynne Baxter reported in the Evening Telegraph of Dundee is a bit surprising therefore.

Best regards

Chris

Good point, Chris, and it may be as simple as believing an actual case as an example would have more resonance than a general opinion.

Of course, there was Wakely, who used his own publication, the Lancet, as an additional bully pulpit in his advocacy for a medical coronership.
