          Note the coded "Whitechapel again" message causes an immediate search of riverboats

          I wonder what is meant by a clue causing the police to investigate a major shipping centre in "the East"

          I don't think that is referring to the East of London

          Do you think it sounds more like reference to a foreign port?

            Neems:

            I agree that it sure seems to be a reference to somewhere other than the East End.

            Quick thought here ;

            The seaports in Portugal would be considered in the East to the British, wouldn't they ?

                Normally only seaports east of the Mediterranean would be regarded as 'east'. Portugal is actually west of London but if anything would be considered as south of the UK.

                  Phil :
                  I know and knew Portugal is geographically west of England, but took a chance there that that might be what East referred to here. My goof.

                  Back to the drawing board....

                    I'd say it might refer to a port on the East coast of England, or much farther afield, such as the Orient
