I believe the Shadwell Centre is actually in Ratcliffe parish. It's another example of STGITE and Ratcliffe being airbrushed out and replaced by the estate agents' golden boys, Wapping Limehouse and Shadwell.

      Thanks Gary,

Well yes, in a historical sense, yes. That's why I captioned Shadwell Centre as the former Ratcliff Board School. And yes the Bazaar you showed would have been located in St George East, but today is Shadwell, Cable St at Dellow.

Ward boundaries have changed in the Borough of Tower Hamlets. In fact, St Paul's church, Shadwell, which kicked off the thread, is now in St Katherine's and Wapping ward! Ward maps - (click)

      Thanks again,

      Roy

        Thanks for that, Roy.

Wards are a pretty meaningless local government construct (to me at least). According to the link you provided Bucks Row isn't in Whitechapel, it's in 'Spitalfields and Banglatown'. Indeed, if you are standing outside Whitechapel station you are no longer in Whitechapel! Whatever next, parts of Shoreditch being renamed 'Hipster Ward?'

Millwall no longer exists, replaced by 'Canary Wharf and Island Gardens Wards' and as for poor old Ratcliffe and STGITE, it's a case of 'gorn and never called me mother.'

Nice picture of Dellow Street, which was Bluegate Fields.

I've just noticed that according to ward classification, I was born in Shadwell. I don't know how I feel about that.

Some years ago my wife went to register the death of someone who had been born in Huntingdonshire, although the village in question had at the time been in the registration district of a nearby Northamptonshire town and had since been swallowed up by Cambridgeshire.

Do you think she could get them to put Hunts as place of birth? Not a bit of it. It was a case of 'computer says no'.

It was a case of: 'I can either put Northants or Cambs, which would you prefer?'

My wife raised her voice above her usual whisper and said, 'Hunts!'

She was escorted out of the building by a burly security guard.

Not really. I had written it all down for her, but apparently the significance of Hunts to the son of a HB knacker didn't carry any weight.

                Smoke

                On my soapbox again.

When did London become 'The Big Smoke'? Growing up in the 50s/60s, I thought it was just 'The Smoke'.
