Default Tumblety In French Press ( 1865)--Debra Arif

Debs mentioned this on a thread Mike Banks started....and since I had a moment, I figured I'd post the article Debs found...it concerns the 1865 Fire at the Barnum Museum in New York City...it burned to the ground.

During the Civil War, Barnum's museum drew large audiences seeking diversion from the conflict. He added pro-Unionist exhibits, lectures, and dramas, and he demonstrated commitment to the cause. For example, in 1864 Barnum hired Pauline Cushman, an actress who had served as a spy for the Union, to lecture about her "thrilling adventures" behind Confederate lines. Barnum's Unionist sympathies incited a Confederate arsonist to start a fire in 1864. On July 13, 1865, Barnum's American Museum burned to the ground from a fire of unknown origin. Barnum re-established the Museum at another location in New York City, but this too was destroyed by fire in March 1868. This time the loss was too great, and Barnum retired from the museum business.

Does that say that Tumblety was being considered as a possible financial source for the rebuilding of the Museum ?

My French is almost as bad as my English.....so if you can translate, do so.
Thanks...er, Merci !

Thanks for the background information, How. I couldn't get the whole story.
Is the Tumblety mention something about John Banvard (in whatever capacity he is being mentioned), being the friend and nominee of the famous Dr Tumblety. Nominee maybe in the business sense?

Its funny they mention him as possibly being a backer because he had been in jail up until June 9th of 1865...as on June 9th, he wrote a letter to the Editor of the Washington Evening Starmentioning his release ...reprinted in the New York Herald.

What was it that encouraged the Parisian reporter to suggest Tumblety ?

That might be it, after all, Debs.....like I said my French is pretty brutal.

Debs:

Couldn't find anything beside the prison release of Tumblety for June-August 1865...and nothing about him in connection to Barnum.

I think you're right.

" M. John Banvard is, it is said, a friend, and perhaps a lender (name)* of the famous doctor Tumblety."

*porte-nom = pseudonym
"le prete-nom" literally translates as "the lender name"

I wonder what we make of this? M. Banvard is a friend of Tumblety. AND Tumblety has used his name for an alias?

Did Tumblety have a habit of using friends' names as aliases?

Thanks Anna.
I got the same result of 'name-lender' using an online translator for 'pret-nom' but on the automatic page translator I used on the French newspaper site it gave the word 'nominee' as a translation of 'prete-nom'.

Nominee has two definitions. One is to do with business, in terms of using someone's name to register a company.Something along those lines.
