Cheers

A few photographs that I took during my time in London for the momentous Ripperologist Magazine 21st Birthday True Crime Conference over the weekend of September 2-4. If you have not done so, you should listen to the talks... almost as good as being there! Go to http://forum.casebook.org/showthread...858#post391858

This is the Crowne Plaza Hotel at 19 New Bridge Street by Blackfriars tube station where Donna and I stayed while we were in London.

We took the tube on Friday evening to take part in the walk around the financial district by the Bank of England led by Nicholas Booth, author of The Thieves of Threadneedle Street: The Victorian Fraudsters Who Almost Broke the Bank of England. See this Youtube video about Mr. Booth's book: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CwJE4wjGW_Y.

While Donna went round the shops -- helping the UK economy as she puts it -- I attended the conference Saturday and Sunday, catching the tube to Tower Hill underground station. Here is a shot of the Tower of London as I emerged from the station, as well as a section of the medieval wall of London to the north of the station, with Roman masonry evident at the lowest level.

London Blue Badge guide Delianne Forget (pronounced in the French way "For-jhay"), who came over for our conference in Baltimore in April, kindly took me and some others at lunchtime on Sunday for a walkabout in Aldgate to see some older remaining buildings. Here we are returning to the Minories and the conference venue, the Chamberlain Hotel (at the right, with the flower boxes). Walking ahead of me you can see Delianne, a vegetarian, headed for a nearby Pret a Manger to purchase some food before the afternoon talks.

And a couple of shots of where the talks took place.... the photograph of the Rip editors was taken just inside the left hand window in the first photograph. Get a load of the cascading begonias. Quite a show. Quite a weekend!!!!

Great pics, Chris. Did you find The Black Friar pub near your hotel?

Yes, thanks, Gary. We didn't go into the Black Friar pub. We thought about it as I did also when I stayed at the same hotel in 2012 when I was in the city for a War of 1812 conference at the University of London in Russell Square. But when I looked over at the hotel back then it was mobbed by Yuppies supping outside the pub. Also the weekend we were in London for the Rip Birthday conference was also the 350th celebration of the Fire of London. So while we considered the Black Friar, we found it similarly difficult to access because of the mob.
