Non JtR:

'11 plus' exam practical. Each boy is given a choice between castor oil and scrapple. Castor oil wins a place at grammar school; scrapple is a secondary modern.

HB:

The younger boys were given their scrapple fix orally, whereas the older ones smoked it behind the bike sheds. Such was the level of addiction among Howard and his mates, however, that they used the rubber pipes from bunsen burners as tourniquets and injected the stuff by hypodermic syringe during chemistry lessons.

Though the children had begged for the old time vermifuge consisting of kerosene, turpentine, arsenic and castor oil, recent scientific discovery had proven that one dose of scrapple would render the human body uninhabitable by any variety of intestinal worms.

HB:

YOUNG HOWARD: "Yuk, miss! That tastes all salty and disgusting!"

TEACHER: "It's very good for you, so swallow it and don't make a fuss!"

YOUNG HOWARD (THINKS): "Must remember that line. It may come in handy."
