Default Deeming and the Home Office Files

Some time ago I ordered a copy of the Home Office Files on Frederick Bailey Deeming, covering the period December 1890 until April 1891 and spanning 43 pages. The files, HO144/479/X30712, which arrived a moment ago, feature correspondence between the Home Office and Helen Matheson asking why the Government refuses to charge Deeming alias Lawson under the Bigamy laws. Correspondence between Beverley Police and the Secretary of State, Correspondence between Scotland Yard’s Criminal Investigations Department and the Home Office, Correspondence between the Home Office and the Hull Police, Correspondence between Messrs Reynoldson and Son and the Home Office, and much much more.

The file is currently out of order, so I will spend some time sorting it into chronological order for easier reference.

Good work, Mike. You might consider an article for Ripperologist based on your findings in the files.

All the best

Chris

Thanks Chris and Chris, it's a huge file, I have only just finished typing up the 1890 magistrate papers for the fraud trial in Hull.

It was quiet a reasonable price actually Phil, cheaper than I had anticipated, the only problem was with the order which took much longer than expected.

Good going, Covell-Cremers ! About damned time you did something !

Chris G.'s suggestion for another Deeming-related article in The Rip sounds good from here.

I have my Ripperological finger in a few pies at the moment Howard. In the past month I have dug up new material on Stephenson, Deeming, Frederick Richard Chapman, Lewis Carroll, and Bram Stoker. Other than that I haven't been doing a lot.
