Hello Howard

As you will have seen, I report on what Vidocq Society member and profiler Richard Walter said at the Drexel University Conference about the supposed secret letter of 1888 at Scotland Yard that he says implicates Montague John Druitt and Prince Albert Victor on pages 3-5 and on the Drexel conference overall on pages 68-69.

Also stay tuned, playmates, because I will be talking shortly on my blog at Casebook about Walter and the alleged secret "sealed" letter at Scotland Yard from Druitt's uncle that gives the answer to the case. Is Jonathan Hainsworth listening????

Best regards

Chris

CG:

I certainly did see and read your piece on what Mr. Walter mentioned at Drexel.
I'll be looking at your blog as well, old bean.

Excellent article on Andrew Firth's photographic forays into the East End, which was to be expected.

Hello Chris,

I too will be watching. Hopefully you will have uncovered the falsey and put this one to bed.. or... God forbid..proove it to be true. I sincerely hope the former.

Many thanks for the excellent article.

best wishes

Phil

Thank you, Phil. We are inclined to think it a fable and that Richard Walter was misled somehow... or else maybe somebody at Scotland Yard was telling tales out of school. Paul Begg has written that it is the sort of thing that seriously muddies the waters. As you know, there is enough rubbish written about the Ripper case!

Not only is Andrew Firth's photography-related article a visual treat....but his encounter with two foxes ( I forgot to mention this a couple of days ago ) while preparing to take some shots in Artillery Passage...and then again in Church Passage was interesting.
I'm almost 58 and up until a couple of months ago had never seen a fox not in captivity before.

Default Chris Scott

I wanted to mention a couple of items from CS this issue, starting with the article from 1889 on the Ripper victims. I hope it's clear to everyone that this was a semi-fictional piece. It wasn't true and shouldn't be used as a source, but an interesting find and read nonetheless. Regarding the 'Murder Mags' piece, I'm curious why Chris Scott put it in there, since it's been on Casebook for years now and I thought Chris was the one who posted it there. Murder Mags, incidentally, is Margaret Hames or Emma Smith fame. She would also have personally known Rose Mylett (who lived at 18 George Street with her and Emma), and possibly Pearly Poll and Martha Tabram and Annie Farmer (all 19 George Street) to say nothing of Eddowes and Stride who lived further down the same road on Flower and Dean Street. Mary Kelly and (I believe) Annie Chapman also lived on George Street at some point, probably 19 George Street in the case of Chapman since Pearly Poll personally knew her.

And like everyone else, I also enjoyed Andrews photos. I hope he doesn't go there at night ALONE.

Yours truly,

Tom Wescott

Speaking of foxes, a few years back when the missus and I were camping at the old Frying Pan I had a nice encounter. We had a little drunken misunderstanding after tipping a few at the Urban Bar in Whitechapel Road (might have involved Absinthe) and I walked back to the "hotel", expecting her to soon follow...she thought I got lost in the loo or something and waited in a bit of a panic for me at the bar while I was actually having a kip in the alley (formerly the end of Thrawl St.)- she had the key so I couldn't get to the room. Huddled up against the wall trying to avoid getting too wet in the drizzle, a fox came around the corner from
Thrawl St. and stopped directly opposite of me- looked at me funny and then went on his way into Brick Lane...I've seen many foxes up this way, but it was quite a shock to the system to see one there.
