Default New Headstone for Chief Inspector Abberline - BBC News

Headstone for Ripper-hunt officer

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/e...et/6269434.stm

A Scotland Yard detective who led the police hunt for Jack the Ripper is to have his grave marked with a headstone 78 years after his death. . .

". . . Mr Abberline always believed the Ripper could have been female." Where did they get that from? Are they confused with Conan Doyle??

As we reported in Ripperologist 80, there will be a memorial service for former Chief Inspector Fred Abberline and his wife on 6 July at the graveside in Wimborne Road Cemetery, Bournemouth.

Nice to see a headstone. Of course, the modern practice is to have a photo of the departed on the stone. I wonder if we'll ever see that?

The addition of the photo on graves today is probably an adoption from the long-time practice in Latin countries, don't you think, Robert?

I didn't know they did that in Latin countries, to tell you the truth, Chris.

Remind me not to die in one of those - 'twould scare the mourners away.

This just in from Michael Stead of Bournemouth Council who has been coordinating the effort to erect the headstone for Abberline in Wimborne Road Cemetery:

"Just a reminder that the Mayor will be arriving at 12.55 on Friday. Protocol requires all other guests to arrive earlier, so if you can be at the grave by 12.45 - 12.50 that would be really useful."

Thanks, Robert. By the way, I believe the plant that is growing behind the headstone, that looks rather like a weed, is actually an evergreen tree that was planted at the time of the 2001 Bournemouth Ripper Convention when we dedicated a temporary marker for the plot.

Ah yes - nice thought, Chris.

I believe that nowadays some of the churchyards - as opposed to cemeteries - are purposely left unmown. The idea is to provide a refuge for certain kinds of flowers, butterflies etc.

Yes nice gesture.
The sapling looks like a young willow, won't do well there though unless we get a wet summer...
I always liked dear old Fred, despite some bad years he always found a good year for the roses.
