Let me tell you, little mister...those candles came from the choicest fat from three plump n' juicy Texan prosses I... um...met...and that I lovingly boiled with an old sneaker, some of Tim Mosley's Slim Whitman LP's...and Robert Linford's moustache wax. Don't you nevermind that they don't stand up straight. You just worry about the boils, pimples and afflictions you'll get from faultiness.
Yours, S.Atan Hell,Pa.

What is wrong with me. I am sat relaxing last night and all I can think about is MONEY!! Not mine, I have none to worry about, but the Stephenson's money, and here is why.....
Robert D'Onston Stephenson found money to.... Move to Islington Buy a house Get married to Annie But how? Then, Richard Stephenson jnr found money to.... Move to Islington Buy a house on Gibson Square (these are going for a cool £million today) Get married to Minna But how? There is solid evidence available showing Richard Jnr was under financial strain as Hull City Archives has several letter books, showing The Hull Corporation asking Richard for rent payements on Willows House. We also know that Robert was no longer working at HM Customs so where did the two get the cash from? One theory I have been looking at is the mother! It has often been written that Daddy Stephenson provided the cash, but in looking at the Primary Sources pertaining to the family, we see the cash on the Dawber side of the family, and not the Stephenson side of the family. Richard Stephenson Snr worked for the Dawber family at Dawber Stephenson and Co, but Union Mill during the period prior to Richard taking over was the property of the Dawber family. It is my view that Richard Snr decided to sell the mill, and chase the position of Water Bailiff, to free himself from his father in laws reign. But if this is the case, how did Robert and Richard Jnr afford to move away? Did Isabella Stephenson, nee Dawber get financial aid from her father? Several points to look at include, Richard Stephenson Snr's money didn't stretch very far, we see this from his last will and testament. Although he remained in middle class housing in middle class districts, they where nowhere near as nice as Willows House, which was the property he had throughout his tenure at The Union Mill. Anyway, just thought I would share my latest mad ramblings!

Here is the Wrights 1863 Trade Directory of Hull entry for businesses on Queen's Dock North Side.
The Entry starts with Grimston Street, which still stands today. Then we see, Edwin Gray, Timber Merchant Dawber and Son, Slaters and Slate Merchants Several other names follow then Vernon street, which is also in exsistance today. I have coloured the areas of Grimston Street, Vernon street, and the probable location of both Edwin Gray, and the Dawber families yards. The close proximity of Gray and Dawber could go some way in explaining why Gray was in Bridlington, when Stephenson was involved in the Incident at Flamborough! ![]()
