  • Hurricane Irene

Over here in the UK we have been watching hourly updates of the path of Irene and note that it is due to hit the American East Coast today. Stay safe if your in the path, and if your told to evacuate or get to safe ground please do it. One of the worst parts of watching the Hurricane Katrina storm some years ago was seeing people staying home against orders only for them to be never seen again.

    Stay safe.

Thanks, Mike. The authorities have been evacuating the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Hopefully people in the path of the hurricane will heed the warning. Baltimore's WBAL TV website features a hurricane tracker.

I dread thinking what the interior of our plant is going to look like after the deluge this weekend. We haven't moved out yet and if yesterday's rain is anything like what we're gonna get this weekend...it's going to be a problem on Monday of major proportions.
I had to take an old slitting machine and put it back together and make it operable since the one I usually use was being pelted by rainwater from the roof. It was like standing under a garden sprinkler.
I can't wait until the move is complete and we're out of this barn.

Good luck to fellow East Coasters this weekend.

Are the hatches battened down on the Black Pearl Jeff?

This morning and late last night the BBC showed footage from space which showed the storm cloud to be 500 miles wide. I cannot begin to comprehend that kind of size! Take care all.

Like I mentioned to you Mike..one co-worker who took off on Thursday for the Jersey shore was told to leave.
This will be the first time in area history that the transit system has shut down completely due to weather related conditions.
Me ? I say bring it on.

In less than a week, we'll have had an earthquake and a hurricane to contend with.

The entire August has been dull, damp and boring...the Black Pearl could do with some excitement to be honest

Actually the weatherman said Irene was 700 miles wide, although these things have a penchant for either weakening suddenly or else strengthening dramatically... they are notoriously hard to predict... so we will see.

This seems to be the latest though for my region: "Projections from the National Hurricane Center in Miami show Irene making its way into the Chesapeake Bay area. Ocean City evacuated all nonemergency personnel late Thursday night as Hurricane Irene churns up the coast, threatening to be one of the worst storms Maryland has seen in years." Per WBAL-TV.

A bit of levity at this time courtesy of a Liverpool friend in Arizona...

                    Subject: The Engineer

An engineer dies and reports to hell.

Pretty soon, the engineer gets dissatisfied with the level of comfort in hell, and starts designing and building improvements.

After a while, they've got air conditioning and flush toilets and escalators, and the engineer is a pretty popular guy.

One day God calls Satan up on the telephone and says with a sneer, "So, how's it going down there in hell?"

Satan replies, "Hey things are going great. We've got air conditioning and flush toilets and escalators, and there's no telling what this engineer is going to come up with next."

God replies, "What??? You've got an engineer? That's a mistake -- he should never have gotten down there; send him up here."

Satan says, "No way. I like having an engineer on the staff, and I'm keeping him."

God says, "Send him back up here or I'll sue."

Satan laughs uproariously and answers, "Yeah, right. And just where are you going to get a lawyer?"

                      Possible good news...

"Irene is weakening and is expected to make landfall as a Category 1 w/ around 85 mph winds."

There's been a mandatory evacuation in New Jersey...down in South Jersey.
                        750,000 people.

750,000 people, now that is a lot of folks to be moving. I was watching this on MSNBC and I wouldn't want to stay. Their even ordering folks along the shoreline in New York to get out of Irene's way because she's a coming and packing winds of more 90 MPH. Even the subways will be shutting down.

                          See here~

They also are or already did consider evacuating 250,000 people from NYC.
NYC is considering or going to shut down their transit system too.

Irene had the potential to cause billions of dollars in damage and affect some 65 million people in cities including Washington, Baltimore, Philadelphia, New York and beyond. Officials along the entire Eastern Seaboard declared emergencies, shut down public transit systems and begged residents to obey evacuation orders ahead of the storm, which federal officials said is likely to affect more people than many others before it.

Irene's wrath in the Caribbean, including Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic and the Bahamas, gave a preview of what is expected in the U.S.: Power outages, dangerous floods and high winds that caused millions of dollars in damage.

Hurricane warnings remained in effect from North Carolina to New Jersey. Hurricane watches were in effect even farther north and included Long Island, Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket, Mass.
In addition to widespread wind and water damage, Irene could also push crude oil prices higher if it disrupts refineries in Delaware, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Virginia, which produce nearly 8 percent of U.S. gasoline and diesel fuel.
