  • How The Other Half Lives ( Riis)

?The same faces are seen night after night, and winter after winter. New faces take the places of those that disappear behind prison walls or in the gloom of the Potters Field, only to grow familiar and old in their turn. . . . [This cycle] is not a pleasant one to discuss. But it is one that must be discussed and settled in some decent, human way, as other cities have settled it, for the matter of safety if not for the credit of New-York.?

Riis's observations concerning Polish Jews, Italians, Irish, blacks, and Germans are in the book.

This is an analysis of his personal perceptions

Jacob Riis. The Single Typhus Lodger in Eldridge Street, 1893

It was a piece of good luck that it was this [station] the typhus lodger found his way, or there is no telling where the trail of contagion he would have started might have ended
        -Jacob Riis-

87/89 Eldridge is on the edge of the Lower East Side
