I was born a 4 minute walk from this spot on 8th & Spruce. The photo depicts Market Street close to 7th Street.

      Hi Howard

This looks more like a July 4 parade than a traffic jam. Is there a caption to the photograph? Where did you find it?

On a Vintage Philadelphia FB page, Chris.

There was no information other than it was from 1897 and on Market Street.
It is. I also looked up Bamburger's and Foster's in the 700 block of Market. They were there in 1897.

Look at all the Stars and Stripes flying from the buildings, the fancy carriage drawn by the white horse, and all the people in the crowd looking toward the left, the direction from which the carriage has just come. This is a patriotic parade, probably Independence Day, July 4.

          Cheers

          Chris
