Today is the 42nd anniversary of a terribly sad event. I remember the day on March 27, 1977 when the deadliest aviation disaster in history occurred on the largest island of the Canary Islands. On that day, 583 people lost their lives on the runway at the airport on the island of Tenerife.
I've read so much about this over the years. I know that the blame fell mainly upon the pilot of the KLM jet. But I still don't like the idea of deliberately placing two big jets on one runway in such thick fog. They should have let the KLM jet take off before instructing the Pan Am jet to proceed onto that same runway.
