I read somewhere that the name 'Wapping' comes from the practice of hanging the corpses of hanged pirates at that place. As the bodies decomposed they became bloated, 'whopping' in the local parlance and the name stuck.

Sounds like a whopp-er to me. More likely a settlement founded by an Anglo Saxon called Wappa I'd have thought.

Is there a thread on Wapping? Limehouse has one, and Shadwell and Ratcliffe/STGITE. Why not whopping Wapping?
